So, we just sent out invites for our engagement party... FI's parents are throwing it for us... and it is a high cost pp and we wanted to keep it small, - family and close friends... so FI invited all of his friends without dates, even if they have been seeing someone for a while... and I invited my friends without dates... now I am getting the questions... can I bring someone??? URGH!! how do I answer that???

I wouldn't! When you throw any kind of affair you set limits... your limits was no dates!!! I would just explain, its very $$$ and you want to keep it small... JUST family and close friends... tell them no one was invited with a date...

personally i think you may have to have uncles gf , BUT maybe you can talk to uncle anf voice your concerns about her and he can keep an extra eye- not an easy situation but if you dont want her to ruin anything you may hav to
as far as friends go, i think you can still keep it without guests...it is justifiable because it is your uncle...and many wont even realize that it is just a gf and not a fiance or wife IMO

As far as friends are concerned, explain that if you were hosting the party they would be able to bring dates, but your FILs are paying and there's a very strict guest number that you guys have to stick to. Apologize, but stay firm.
As far as your uncle is concerned, I think you might have to suck it up and invite her. If it were me, I would invite her but avoid her all night, as mean as that sounds.
