Oh boy....MIL dress

Oh boy....MIL dress

Okay, I think my in-laws have lost it.

A few weeks ago, my mom FINALLY got her dress. It's not poofy or flashy, it's simple with pretty beading, has a jacket, chiffon, classy...it's mom. Anyway, I shared a picture of it with FH and his family since HIS mom had not found a dress either (yes, we're getting married next month). The next morning, she calls me and says she found a dress and if I can help her find a store in our area that sells it. So she gives me the dress number, I look it up on the website, and sure enough...........it looks EXACTLY like my mom's dress! So, I ever so delicately explain the incredible resemblence to my mom's dress...she gets the hint...and searches for another dress. Problem resolved, right? Well..............
A few days ago, FSIL tells me the FMIL found a dress. She starts off describing it as 'cinderla-like with lots of layers'. Is it me, or does this sound really flashy, especially compared to what my mom is wearing? FSIL said it has so many layers that one layer will be removed from the dress to make her a wrap!
She went from a simple conservative dress to looking like a princess? I don't get it.

Am i over reacting? Do I ask to see a picture of the dress? I don't want my mom to look out-done by his mom. Does that make any sense?
My mom's dress looks like this, but different color

First: Your Mom's dress is beautiful. Who is the designer? If you don't mind me asking.

Second: I think you should definitely ask to see the dress. Don't make it sound like you have to approve it, just say 'it sounds lovely. I want to see it' Then when you see it, if it is not appropriate, deal with it then.

I wouldn't stress...if the dress is overkill it'll make your mom look even better for choosing something appropriate and tasteful!!! I think her dress is beautiful!!

Honestly, I don't think the mother of the groom should outdo the mother of the bride. When me and my mom were shopping for her dress we found a nice simple dress but soon after realized that she should really be in a dress that stood out more this way she would look like the mother of the bride.

Honestly, I really don't know what to say. Your mom's dress does look very simple which is okay, if that's her but I don't know if you should tell FMIL about her dress being more flashy than mom's b/c that might upset her. Maybe FH can say something? I hope you don't take this the wrong way but If I were the mother of the bride I would want to find something with a little more detail that would make me look like mother of the bride. Please understand, this is just my opinion.

Have you asked your mom how she would feel about this?

Thanks! It's the Jade collection by Jasmine Bridal. I'll have to play it off to see a picture or something. All I remember is that when she said her mom will look like a princess, I kept thinking 'but I'M THE PRINCESS!'

I definitely agree with you on the princess thing. FMIL should not be stealing your thunder.

Excuse me, but isn't a MOG a little too old to be wearing a dress that makes her look 'Cinderella like' ?

If your FMIL wants to look like a 1970's bedspread with poofy layers, then by all means let her. YOUR mom will be dressed appropriately.
You as the bride will have most of the attention anyway.

Of all the weddings I have attended over the years, I can only remember what the moms wore at my sis' and my 2 BF's weddings (and that was 12 and 14 years ago).

Don't sweat it.

Hey, I wouldn't go crazy over it... that's sort of micromanaging and it's gonna drive you and your family crazy. As long as her dress isn't white... I wouldn't say anything. To be fair, she did take the hint and went in the complete opposite direction of what your mom's wearing!

Don't even worry about it. Nobody (well, except for you) will outshine your mother in her dress. It's beautiful. And as someone else said, FMIL will look a tad ridiculous being 'cinderella-like' at her age.
