Oh no

So my mom had hip surgery almost 2 weeks ago... Now shes been in a rehab and now she told me that she is being discharged on friday.. Ummm They have not had her walk yet... Shes still in a wheel chair and they have no removed her staples... I can;t have her come home.. I have a hyper dog that will knock her over.. We have a small house that won't be able to accomidate her... Ugh... I don't know why they are doing this and I don't know what to do...

She was shocked to when she found this out =/

a patient has the right to refuse discharge if she feels that it would be unsafe. I would contact the social worker at the rehab and find out what the reason is that they are sending her home (ie: is the insurance only paying until friday?). I know in the hospitals, a patient can refuse discharge, and what you do is you contact an agency that the facility has to provide you with (in the hospital it's IPRO) and they will despute it with your insurance company. You need to talk to the social worker.

She must have a case worker, otherwise ask to speak with a patient advocate. Discharge planning starts immediately upon a hospital admission and someone should have asked her about her plans upon being discharged and etc.

Make sure you and her are clear with everyone that you do not have a safe (yes, use the word safe) environment for her to come home to. Ask for resources to get extra help and anything else that you can. I'm amazed that she hasn't walked, depending upon her condition or history. Most rehab floors I've worked on have hip patients out of bed to a chair (with atleast a step or two) within a few days if not in 24 hours.

Once you leave the hospital services are almost impossible to get unless you are willing to pay for them your self.
