JennRenne, do you have a shoe maker in your town? (shoe repair shop) call them, they can tell you what to clean it with, and worst case they can fix it for you.,

It's completely ruined, and I caused most of the damage trying to clean it. Now the quest is on to replace it...

If its really a good bag maybe you can go to a dry cleaner
