OH NO... JURY DUTY!!!!

OH NO... JURY DUTY!!!!

FH just got a slip calling him for jury duty... i didn't open it yet. If he has to report SOON and gets picked (thinking worse case scenario), can he get out of it due to getting married in a month??

Yes you can postpone it one time but be ready to appear in another 6 months!
I just got the slip too. I have to call tonight actually.

What's so bad about jury duty?

Absolutely NOT. they won't let you off the hook for anything. How do you think this would spoil wedding plans?
I served grand jury for 2 months. nothing bad about it at all. Got out at 4PM everyday. I loved that fact.

ETA- that's right! I delayed it 6 months first. He can do that! But honestly, it wasn't that bad.

this would spoil wedding plans because what if he gets called for a long case???? (i'm just thinking the worst here) we're getting married next month!!

ok good, so we're off the hook then?

Oh wait... sorry I'm not thinking straight.
OK here is what you have to do. Have him show up the day he's assigned... (that's if he makes the cut when he has the call in. sometimes they'll call in and not have to report)
THEN MAKE SURE HE HAS THE HONEYMOOM PLANE TIX with him to show that he'll be out of town...... THEN they'll delay him 6 months.

eeek... we don't have the tix yet. If needed we can tell our travel agent to HAND THEM OVER LADY!!!
I do have the booking receipt! And all our contracts!

You don't need proof to delay the 6 months on your first summons. You just send it back and request postponement.

Re: OH NO... JURY DUTY!!!!

whew!!! i was so afraid of this because ive only served once a long time ago so i forgot about the postponement thing. and i just got something in the mail from them verifying my address... so i was joking with FH that we're going to be called close to the wedding.... and here it is! LOL

Sorry
Again I know this isn't PC
But I wouldnt avoid it. I find it my right to go to Jury Duty. I bring my book and headsets (if I can) and some snacks.

Last time I was selected for a criminal case. Took three weeks (including the 3 days of deliberations) it was a great experience. To see the law work.

Just me tho..

I can't wait for jury duty. I got a survey 2 years ago and I though I would be called, but nope. I know there are no excuses now but I did write that I was a F/T student ont eh survey!

.

What's so bad for me is that my company doesn't pay us while we're on Jury Duty, and I can't survive on the $40 a day jury fee! I could do a few days, but not a long trial.

FYI - instead of postponing, you may want to wait and call in, then ask for the postponement when you're there in person if it comes to that. I was recently called for jury duty in Suffolk County - the courthouse in Islip. My number was 134 - they had 1-30 come in for Monday, and never called anyone else after that. I was credited with good service and they won't call for another 4 years.

edited to add I agree with Xelindrya about civic duty, and would have no problem with it if I could do so and still cover my mortgage! I just wish my company felt the same and paid us.

i don't mind serving... but its just sorta bad timing, you know??

Re: OH NO... JURY DUTY!!!!

I just called and I don't have to go Monday... but I have to call again Monday.

P.s. you don't need proof to postpone the first time!

She's right. I just did this. On the summons itself there should be an area where he can ask for a postponment.

I serve all the time. I've been called 9 times in 6 years. they don't leave me alone even once I prove that I've served. YOu can postpone twice. You will get another date assigned exaclty 6 months later.

I served for 2 full days. First day I got out at 3:35pm and second day was almost 4pm. I did nothing all day except sit, wait to be called and napped. Turns out I was not needed in any cases. This was back in January 2004 when I just lost my job and had no where to go/do. I did received my $80.00 payment for the 2 days. It was my second time as 1999 was my first time.

It's a civil duty as US citizens. There's no other way around it. On the bright side you don't have to serve for another 4 years.

I just finished a 4 week case.... I was on a jury in Federal court in CI. I have to say the experience was great. I served with good people. We had days we were there late and we had days we were let out real early. If you FI gets picked he can let them know about travel plans they were pretty easy going on the people who were traveling...
