DH just backed into the concrete part at the base of a light pole in a parking lot. He just couldn't see it, it was in his blind spot. There isn't much damage, but enough...the bumper is dented and cracked in one corner and one rear light is out. Thank God that is all! DH is just fine too. The worst part is the truck is only 4 months old!
DH and I don't know if it would be better to pay for this on our own or go through insurance. I have no clue what this will cost!
I can't believe this just happened!

If you go through your insurance, remember your probably looking at an increase..

That's what we figured. I think that the increase will probably be more in the long run than paying for this to be repaired. I just have no clue what a bumper, tail light, and labor will cost. At least DH and I have off coming up.
not sure about a truck...but I was hit from behind and there wasn't much damage to my bumper - it was $250...we did it in cash (in 1999)
but some insurance companies don't count any claim under $1000 against you - so you may want to weigh that and the deductable..

Re: Oh, not the new car!
Something similar happened to me this summer. I backed into a fire hydrant that was in my blind spot and in a very weird spot as well. I dented my bumper. We ended up spending the $500 to get a new bumper rather than go through insurance. Hope everything works out.

About how long did it take to get fixed. I am hopeful that, since DH can drive it, he can schedule the repair and they can order the parts, then just fix it once the parts are in. I hope it doesn't take too long.
Is it illegal for DH to drive it with one light broken?

That's the worst feeling especially when the car is brand new! I know how you feel... we just recently hit a deer and our truck was only 4 months old too! We did about $3100 worth of damage. IMO, it sound like you don't have too much damage so I would just get it fixed on my own and would not go through the insurance company. Good Luck

Re: Oh, not the new car!
A truck driver hit my car in a merge .. I was already clearly in front of him, and into the lane .. we were in a traffic jam .. everyone was stopped .. then dumba$$ decided to move forward .. and hit me!!!
Anyway .. luckily neither of hubby or I was hurt .. and there wasn't much damage to the car .. basically just a scrape in the paint .. but the light was cracked. Turned out to be pretty expensive to have it replaced .. over $300, I believe .. and the trucking company wouldn't pay up .. but I also didn't want a police report written or for it to go through insurance .. because I didn't want a rate increase.
I hate insurance .. you pay all that money .. but when borderline minor things happen .. you never want to tap into the coverage because the rates are already insanely high!
Try to get a few different quotes from reputable companies for the repair work.

Re: Oh, not the new car!
My little incident took place on a friday and the following Wed. it went in and was fixed in the same day. They would have done it sooner but my car was also new (5 months) and they needed to order the bumper.
