well the songs are really your own personal tastes. What are the songs you hate? Your dj should have a list and then you basically say what you definitely DO NOT want to hear. That should make it simpler.
My dj had YMCA for christ's sake!!! you gota be kidding so my do not play list is like
mariah carey toni braxton boy bands techno funk rock country jennifer lopez britney spears
There is more but I am like you and working on my list also.

this is what I did: must have songs must have groups DO NOT PLAYS
(I also had a list of the kind of music for dinner...but thats b/c we did a little something different for DH)
I also mentioned the type of people that were attending...not younger than late 20's...so I didn't want any really recent music - so that I was sure that there wouldn't be any genres that didn't fit
here is my list...work off it if you want... Madonna – Ray of Light *George Michael – Faith Fleetwood Mac – Don’t Stop thinking about tomorrow Billy Idol – Dancing with myself *Los Bravos – Black is Black (Groom’s Uncle Pete sang originally) *Michael Jackson – Billie Jean *Van Halen – Jump and Hot for Teacher (Jump for Bride’s Aunt Sandy) *Village People – YMCA (for Bride’s father) Katrina and the Waves – Walking on Sunshine *Police – Every little thing she does is magic Cyndi Lauper – Girl’s Just Want to Have Fun (for Bride’s mother) *Barry Manilow – CopaCabana (for Bride’s mother) *groove is in the heart – dee-lite *Never There – Cake Conga is OK…if it is of the Harry Belefonte genre * My first, my last, my everything – Barry White * Let me stand next to your fire – Jimi Hendrix
Bee Gees Fat Boy Slim Gogos Culture Club Wham Monkees *Beatles *Elvis Abba *Duran Duran *Glenn Miller *70’s Disco *big band (beginning of night?)
Ethnic – Salsa *Spanish Hava Nagilah German polka
