Ok girls....

Ok girls....

Anyone else ready for our 2004 volunteer project? I'm dying to do something. Several people mentioned Little Flower which is fine with me. I'll be happy to call them unless someone else was already corresponding with them-I wouldn't want to steal anyone's thunder.

Are we shooting for this month?

All thoughts welcome.

Re: Ok girls....

I will do a search. I think I remember seeing it also.

Anna, up to what point can you participate? February's probably pushing it, right? I'm sure we could pull something together by the end of January so it's probably not an issue.

Re: Ok girls....

Id say early Feb at the latest, even though Im due March 3rd, I really dont want to travel too far in the last 2 weeks.

As far as late Jan, I have a party on Jan 31st, so I hope its not that day!

Thanks for helping with this Jenn! LEt me know if you need help in organizing! =)

Re: Ok girls....

I just pulled up the info for Little Flower to call them and I realized they're in Wading River. I'm just concerned that a few of the people who had an interest in doing something will be unable to make it due to the location. I think we'll gather more interest if the charity is more centrally located.

I'll try to think of something more Eastern Nassau/Western Suffolk and meanwhile, we'll see who else is interested. I'm hoping people are just busy from the return to work after the holidays...I know that's what took me so long to call them.

Sorry, I should have remembered they were out there. And I can't even blame baby/preggo brain.

Re: Ok girls....

I don't know if this is something you'd be interested in, but I run the community service club at my school, and one of the places we were going to look into volunteering at was the Dolan Family Health Center in Huntington. I know they have lots of programs for underprivleged kids, moms, and families. Maybe they could use the LIW girls' help??

Re: Ok girls....

Jenn, that sounds great to me as long as we don't end up duplicating your efforts. I'd love to hear more about exactly what they do. (I guess it's pretty self explanatory, but I can't help but want to know more after what happened last time.)

Does anyone else want to participate?

Re: Ok girls....

Jenn, I'm on maternity leave, so don't worry about duplication... the club is on hiatus!

As for what they do, and in what capacity they might need us... I hadn't gotten that far yet!

Re: Ok girls....

Sounds good. I'll look them up and give them a call next week, along with any other suggestions or places I can think of, after we get some more replies.

Re: Ok girls....

I am interested. I am in Western Suffolk - south shore. Wading River is far, but I would be willing to go since I do not have any other suggestions.

Re: Ok girls....

Does the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence interest anyone?

SCCADV

It's in Bay Shore, and I think its central location might help to gather more people. Here is the volunteer opportunity that sounded like it would make the most sense for our group:

Shelter Aide
Provide Creative playtime for children, assist staff with shelter chores, sort donations and perform/participate in various other tasks and activities

I'll call them Monday the latest for more info.

Please respond if this interests you.

I'm interested.

Re: Ok girls....

As long as it's at a time when Patrick or my mom or sister can watch Nicolas, I'm in.

I am up for it. Bay Shore is right by me too.

Re: Ok girls....

I called and spoke to a very nice woman, Briana, who said they don't allow anyone to volunteer until they've taken the training class because of the sensitivity surrounding domestic violence. (Totally understandable.) The next training class isn't until March or early April. No definite date yet. She's sending me an information packet with more details so I can post any additional info that provides.

In the meantime, is everyone willing to travel to Wading River? Anna, are we pushing it? Should we wait until April?

Re: Ok girls....

I can take the class if its early April... If its March, I doubt it
and will it be daytime or evening?
Daytime might be tough with no babysitting
So hopefully the classes hours are flexible!

I cant wait!

Re: Ok girls....

At this point let's wait until April. I got the info from SCCADV yesterday. I'll look over it shortly.
