I am officially enrolled at Dowling for graduate school this semester (in Elementary Ed). Just taking one class for this semester and will take 2 per semester going fwd.
Lets take a poll: *Are you a 'binder' or 'notebook' type of person ? I really like the binder so I just hole-punch and handouts and stick them next to that days notes. *Are you one to hilite as you read/study from textbooks ? I used to do that, but just found it distracting. I prefer taking notes when Im studying. Who knows, I'll probably go back to old habits.. Its been a few years since being out of school..
Im totally excited and psyched !!!!!!!
I should be joining the teachers out there in the very near future !

Re: OK, Help me get in gear...
Well it's been awhile since I was in school but I was a notebook person, less to carry. I did not highlight in my books. I took notes and I use to study alone. I have a hard time studying in groups. I also studied in the early, early morning. Since I am a morning person.
I loved college and graduate school and all the other classes I took. I guess I just love to learn and I can be a bit of a bookworm too. It kept me out of trouble
Congrats!!

I like the notebooks that have a folder in the front cover.
You KNOW I'm totally psyched for you!! You have to make sure John takes a picture of you tomorrow as you leave for your first day (night) of school!!!

Good for you!!
I'm a notebook person...gotta be 3 sections with folders in between...
I hate highlighting in my books (it messes them up)
But I write out tons and tons of index cards to help me study...yes, I still do flashcards...if it works, it works!

Re: OK, Help me get in gear...
Anna, I'm so excited for you!! Honestly I love school, not the tests and papers as much, but learning and doing research. Maybe 1 day I'll go back for a PhD.
I prefer binders b/c it keeps everything secure, and you're right about the handouts, much more organized this way. But, the small notebooks are less bulky for classes that have lots of notes and no handouts.
I prefer not highlight the expensive textbooks and maybe just write notes to summarize paragraphs in the margins in pencil. I found it much more realistic to look for information that was already mentioned in lecture in the text instead of reading word-for-word. This way you can read more about what the professor talked about. I don't remember ever being tested on topics that were not covered in class or on homework.
Good luck!!!

Re: OK, Help me get in gear...
Congratulations and good for you!!!!!
Personally I like notebooks better but I've been using binders b/c they are MUCH easier. A lot of teachers like to give out journal articles or standards etc. Keeping them in a binder is so much easier. Then at the end of each semester I get a BIG binder and put all of my stuff in there. It makes everything easier to find rather than having 15 notebooks.
As for highlighting I'm a highlighter. I guess it's just the way I learn but I need to have things stand out for me. My notes are even writtn in different colors. If I write in one color it looks like jibberish to me.
It's funny but I don't have many tests to 'study' for. I've taken 8 grad courses so far and have had only 1 midterm and 2 final tests. It's mostly papers, projects, lessons and stuff like that.
Best of Luck to you

Anna,
Best of luck back at school. I just finished grad school last semester and now I am taking this semester off before I go back again. I really enjoy school also.
I like to use a notebook and have a separate folder for handouts!

Re: Fellow Dowling student here!
I graduated with my MAsters a year ago. I was a spiral notebook and highlighting type of student. I thought a binder was just too bulky for me to bring. As for the highlighting, I would take notes in class, then go home and highlight the key words and important details. It really depends on how your comfortable with studying.
