My keyboardist and DJ both are the owners of their companies. I say since the whole fee is going to them, you dont have to tip, he says you tip the same as you would an employee. (I am not being cheap its just that I have heard if there the owner you dont have to tip.) I trust all your opinions so please let me know what you think.

I have not even started thinking about tipping for my wedding, but I usually don't tip owners. My hairdresser opened her own salon recently. I used to tip her 20% but since she opened her own salon, I don't tip her. Since the money is going directly to her, I don't see why a tip is necessary. However, I don't know if that is the standard for wedding vendors.

If they are owners, then you do not have to tip. You can if you want, but there is really no reason since the whole fee is going to them. If they have assisstants then you tip them.

I would feel funny not tipping, but thats just me.

I thought the same thing - if the person owns the company, you shouldn't have to tip then. Then, a friend of mine who cuts my hair started cutting hair out of her house part-time, so I went there one day instead of the salon. I didn't think I had to tip her, but did anyway, and I found out later that she would have been very insulted if I didn't tip her, since a tip is a sign of a job well done.

I don't know; if I were the owner, I wouldn't expect a tip.....

Owners don't get tiped, that the general rule.

I don't know if a tip is necessarily the only way to show a job is well done. A thank you card can do the same thing. I think that if someone is insulted if they are not a tipped adn they own the business, then they view a tip as mandatory and not just a gratuity.

I also felt wierd not tipping, but you have to think about what you can afford. It's an awkward situation, but you need to do what you think is right. How much do you tip photographers and DJ's anyway?

I personally have every intention of tipping. First although they are the owners not everything is going to them, think of all the overhead thats involved that they have to pay. The amount they make has to pay for the rent on the office, other salaries, equipment, etc.

Plus I would feel really bad not tipping them but tipping the others. I think you should tip them based on the work and not on their position in the company. JMO

I have been debating this as well. Some of my vendors are the owners and I am toying with giving them small gifts as a tip (bottle of wine, box of chocolate) so that I am not handing them a $100 bill but also not totally disrespecting them

It's Simple, if they do a good job they should get a TIP! No matter who they are!!

My photographer, videographer and DJ are the owners of their own company and I am tipping them all.

I had the same situation & I'm not even sure if we tipped the keyboardist b/c we didn't even see him that day. We were taking pictures during the cocktail hr. But we did tip our DJ even though he was the owner. I think we gave him $150 & said it was for him and the MC so maybe he gave the whole thing to the MC or maybe he split it. But, yes you do not have to tip owners. It is up to your discretion.

Yes, you tip. Tipping is for service and the owners will provide you with better service than their employees, because they care about the company and you as a client.

I do my color and cut in the city at a great salon and I am services by 2 owners. They both get a great tip, because they try harder.
