I really try to appreciate all styles of art as well, but this I just don't get. I mean WHY orange? It kinda just makes it look like a construction site from the pics I've seen? Maybe if I see it in person, I hate to judge but...
ETA: OK, I didn't see it since they added the draping, it looks a little less like a construction site now.

Sibyl Rubottom, who saw the artists’ “The Umbrellas,” in which 3,100 umbrellas were opened in California and Japan in 1991, said she started planning her trip to New York from San Diego last spring.

DH and I are going to see it tomorrow. At the moment, I have to admit that I don't get it either. But maybe I'll change my mind after I see it.

Re: Ok I love art I do....
it's called an installation... just another type of artwork... some people like painting, some people like drawing, others like building installations... it is kind of like a huge sculpture that somehow affects the environment around it... alot of things in art become great because that artisit was the first person to attempt to do something... the artist wants to make people think... so in this case i guess it is working...
there was once an artshow where an artist found a urinal on the side of the road, so he signed it and brought it to the art show... that urinal is now famous and is in all of the art history books... he was the first person to do this and so it sent a message...
i hope this helps explains things a bit...

Re: Ok I love art I do....
it can definately be strange...
in college i had to do two installations.... and they were SO wierd!
in one situation I took a single locker and moved it into the school lobby... inside the locker i put a cd player which played a sex and animal noises over and over again... it was so bizarre, but my prof loved it, because i dislocated something... i put something someplace where it didnt belong....and people were looking at this locker like people were actually inside it doing something naught!
for another project, i took one of the shelves in our studio where artwork in progress usually went and made it into a comfy looking bed... nothing that anyone could ever fit in.. but it had pillows as a matress... my comfy blanket, favorite stuffed animal etc... the point was that I felt as if i was always in that studio, so i might as well as moved my bed in there to sleep there... i dislocated my sleeping enviroment to a shelf in our art studio... again bizarre to the outside eye... but it kinda made sense once it was explained....
if you ever want to see truly bizarre artwork look up Matthew Barney... he usually exhibits at the Guggenheim...OMG!!! it is crazy!
