My FI wants to do placecard holders and favors. I think that by doing the holders we then have to spend on placecards because the ones the hall gives you probably wont fit into them. I told him that I dont mind just the folded placecard on a table outside the room. I would rather spend on a nicer favor than split our budget on placecards, holders and favors. What is everyone doing?

I found some reasonable placecard holders at Micheals. Thats the only reason why I decided to do both. As for favors I found a reasonable price for them also. (I'm still waiting to recive them from an website but thats another story)
So if you can find resonable price placecard holders and you really want to do both than go for it. Or the with the money you would be saving by using the halls placecards you could maybe get something that you really want for your wedding.

I am doing favors only. My opinion is I rather get a nicer favor then a placecard holder that sometimes is just thrown away. Just my opinion. I love the placecards that my reception hall uses anyone. This is sufficient.

I think if you have a special place card holder it kind of IS the favor, like a silver frame or something. You can very easily, and inexpensively, print up something on your computer to go into a holder. Good luck.
