Re: Ok lets start talking w/a controversial topic!
5. What does annoy me is people who think that their religion is the only one that matters. I've encountered a few 'friends' who purposely say Merry Christmas to people who they know arent christian, and insist on referring to 'Christmas Break' as opposed to 'Winter Break' because they want to prove a point. They think that they shouldnt have to change their ways because other religions exist as long as they are the majority. They are opposed to anything season-neutral and do it to prove a point (or so they told me). I don't think most people are like that but it rubs me the wrong way.
i'm not sure about the people u've come into contact with but could it be that they refer to it as christmas break because that's what its called? and i don't mean that sarcastically but in the school system we have a christmas break AND a winter break.. winter break is in feb, falls around presidents week.. christmas break is in december.. falls around well christmas.. so when i refer to it as christmas break it's not out of lack of tolerance but due to the fact that that is actually what it's called..if u talked to me aout winter break i'd be thinking u'r talking bout feb..

sounds like she celebrates the over-commercialized version of it...now a days people don't seem to associate christmas with religion...sad but true
This is soo true!

anyhoo.. most schools although not closed on hanukkah (which is most likely due to the fact that hanukkah is a 7 day holiday not one) are closed on most other major jewish holidays.. even in districts where students are not jewish schools are closed on yom kippur, rosh hashannah and spring break revolves around passover, not easter.
correct - this is due to the STAFF that would not be working
and thank goodness for them!! cause if not, we' wouldn't have had those holidays off and then i wouldn't have been able to go on my disney cruise!! best school years ever are the ones where the jewish holidays are on a thursday and friday leaving a four day weekend right after school starts..

I'm not a teacher, I'm a student. I've gone to college and currently law school out of state and we have one break between fall and winter semesters. We have Thanksgiving, Winter/Christmas and Spring breaks (spring break is late March). I'm not offended by people who refer to the middle break as Christmas break -- many of my Jewish friends do. I'm bugged by the people who told me explicitly that they are doing it to prove a point (and also purposely send Christmas cards to their Jewish friends to prove a point which is even weirder IMO).

Yes, that they think being politially correct is BS. One friend thinks its silly to change her behavior just because of minority religions. She wants everything to go back to being 'Merry Christmas' instead of 'Seasons Greetings' and thinks it's a load of poo for anyone to refer to our break as 'Winter Break' (even if it is a 5 week break between semesters).
Edit: that same friend thought it was poo also that she was asked to teach her music class generic holiday songs in addition to Christmas songs, when she would prefer just Christmas songs for the holiday recital.

i think it's funny that anyone would be annoyed by a non-religious person celebrating christmas.
most christians who celebrate christmas tell their kids that some big fat guy in a red suit is coming down their chimney to bring them presents. what the heck does THAT have to do with christ?! ok sure, the origin of santa is st. nicholas, a christian bishop...but what he's turned into really has nothing to do with the religious aspect of the celebration of christmas.
i was raised as a catholic, but i don't believe in it anymore. so i should give up my right to celebrate christmas? it makes me happy to get together with my family, give them gifts i've put thought into, and have that warm fuzzy feeling inside. is it so wrong that i enjoy a special day for other reasons than its original purpose?
actually, it kind of annoys me that anyone might suggest someone should have to give that up simply because their beliefs have changed. i'm not saying i believe in nothing; i do believe in SOMETHING but i think everyone is entitled to celebrate and be happy for whatever they want on that day or whatever day.

The point of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ. It irritates me when people don't recognize this...even Christians.

I love you and agree with you 10000000000000000% Just cause i do not believe in 'god' doesnt means i am not going to celebrate this time with my family who do believe. I love getting gifts and spending the day with my family being happy...to me its like thanksgiving....with gifts!

I do understand that but to say someone shouldnt celebrate the comercial aspect of the holiday because they dont believe in god is just not right.........most religious people I know do not go to church on christmas they go to family

a little off topic but...what i dont understand is how people who are so 'religious' and think they follow the 'christian way' can talk about what people should and shouldnt do....but yet they do things that are against the 'church' .Yet they are the first to say something about someone else.....FH mom does this...she talks crap about what everyone else does and judges people all the time but yet thinks she is all high and mighty and she follows 'gods rules' yet she judges everyone and everything.....THAT ANNOYS ME!
I feel if people think it is wrong to celebrate christmas and not be 'religious' then i think people who arent 100% pure and don't follow every word of the bible shouldnt either!
to each their own...celebrate or dont! its your choice
