OK - name change question #3000

So - the 1st step is SS office, right?

What do I need to bring - my marriage license and old SS card?

How long does it take to get my new SS card?

Then - I can go to the DMV? What do I bring with me there?

Are those the only 2 erquired places to go for your name change?

you can go in any order....DMV first if you like.

DMV I was told you need your 'old' license and the marriage certificate and that's it.

to be safe, i'm going in with all my artillery...ss card, credit cards, birth certificate and old license...i have bad luck at the NY DMV. THEN i'm going to the SS office.

SS: Marriage license, bring old card just in case. You can download the form online (they will tell what to bring also). Takes about 10 days to 2 weeks (or so).

DMV: Marriage license. You old driving licence. When I got divorced, they asked me to bring my SS letter (that they printed for showing showing that I had made the request with the SS). I did not wait to get my new SS card.

For the 'vain' woman like me....LOL
The DMV office told me they had to take a new pic for my license. New name, new pic.

Other: bank, credit cards, bills, work, etc....

dont forget to make some calls and change your credit cards. . .

and you can change your passport too if you have one!

when u go to the SS office bring your birth certificate....I know u do not need it per say however when i went i am glad i brought it......turns out in the computer it says that my bday is 6/20 and it is really 6/17!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was there for an hour tryng to straighten that out
she said when they changed to computers that some info got transferred wrong!

So make sure all your stuff is up to date and RIGHT!
