Ok guys so I am officisally sad ..Today my 100 day countdown started so was yay for awhile, but then I ran into a friend who works for a florist and the turned to after we started talking about my wedding flowers.
I was planning to use gerbers everywhere, but she said they are super fragile and for an outdoor wedding at the end of July, there is no gurantee and a high likliehood that they will wilt...
Ok so I am officially upset-really upset because our ENTIRE wedding was planned arounf the gerbers! She's been working for the florist for 5 years so she's seen a lot of weddings and she's just that kind of person who's blatantly blunt and would never lead you astray. So I know she is telling the truth. I've heard about gerbers fragility from other places but have seen so many pics of hand-tied gerber bo-k's I had hoped we'd be ok.
So now I am stuck for BM's bo-ks. HELP! I don't wnat expesnive flowers and I'd really prefer not to go the roses route. Any suggestions for brightly colroed, sturdy flowers? Red orange and pink?
if it doesn't work out we will have to do all ivory/white and i really don't want to....

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
Just so you know I just worked at Macys for the flower show and they had about five vases full of Gerbers and they were there for about a week. Maybe they are not great out of water but in water they were fine. Just something I observed HTH

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
Im worried about the cp's because they will be in wheatgrass not vases of water so though they will have water tubes, worries me. And the bo-ks are my biggsest concern because they will not have water sources and if it doesn't rain, it will probably be 85+ because its the end of july so the wilt factor is scary to think about. But thanks/

I am really sorry to hear this, I know you really had your heart set on the gerbers! My sister did calla lilles for her July wedding and they held up beautifully. The great thing about them is you don't need many in a bouquet for them to still be stunning. I came across this site that shows them in many different colors, including pink and orange. I just pulled it up quick, so I have no idea if these prices are even fair, but I just wanted to give you some idea! HTH!
I know with hydrangea some florists split the stems of the flowers and others put them in that green foam and hide it underneath the ribbons and stuff for the bouquets...do you think that might work??
As for your centerpieces, if the above works..maybe you can use the green foam stuff in your centerpieces...

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
A friend of mine used gerber daisies for her wedding last August and had no problems. They had them for the bouquets and centerpieces.
Is it that you friend thinks that the gerbers will be too fragile to create the centerpieces with? Or, just to use at all?

what about hiding water tubes in the bo-ks? (however, you have to make sure they don't leak!) There must be a way...
This is the exact reason I was forbidden to have anenomes in my bo-ks and centerpieces... they look gorgeous, but apparently they're too delicate for anything practicle other then a tempting martha stewart weddings flower shoot

Have you picked your florist yet? On the boards brides have been saying that Burton' s charges by the flower no matter what type it is. That might open your choices. I think the brides have also said the prices were good but I have personally not checked out Burton's cause FH has his mind set on Murphy & Company.

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
I got a sample of my bouquet.....all gerbers and I kept it out of water for 20 hours and stayed beautiful!!! If you put them in water a few times throughout the day they should stay fine! If you are really worried than switch your flowers. I had no problems though!!! Hope that helps!

Now a days you can use vases on the dais, you can talk to your florist about how big the bo-k bottom will be and add water and crystals. I am going to do this with my bo-k, but with no water. Just a purple square vase. You could ask your florist to use rubber bands under the ribbon, you can unwrap the ribbon and put them in water, so you will have gerber bo-k's for the reception. HTH

I don't think Gerbera Daisies are a delicate flower. They will hold up for your wedding if not longer. They usually have plastic tubes right up by the base of the flower head and the stems are thick. I think you should ask around a bit more. Don't give up on the Gerber Daisies yet!!

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
Well i did some research and yes, according to actual flower websites, the gerbers are not a hardy flower which i find crazy considering they are an african daisy and I always thought it was pretty warm over there. But apaprently they do not do that well over 70 degrees-Not flowers for high heat and humidity.
I think they will be ok in the CP's because w ecan hide water tubes, but they are said to droop which might cause and issue. I am worried about the bo-k's because they will be hand-tied and Im not savvy enough to hide the water sources under ribbons. We wanted to DIY because our florist just wanted way too much and I am STUCK with them for NO OTHER FLIPPING REASON than FH used to work at a gas station and they FLIPPING CUSTOMERS! They arent giving us any deals but he likes them and wants to give them the business. Ihave tried changing his mind but its always resulted in wars. Thats why I said I would at least DIY the bo-ks...
Sorry guys...just really frustrated right now. If I didnt have bad luck, Id have no luck at all, so I fear the flowers will give out on me.
Maybe Ill buy a bunch and see how they do with the water sources...just dnt know hwow to hide them!
I am also using gerberas (minis) for my BM bouquets... My BM bouquets will be monochromatic with sweet roses of the same color and bear grass spiraled underneath it for extra support.
Maybe you can use mini-gerberas instead of the larger ones and use bear grass or hosta leaves maybe to support?
Fret not, all is not lost....

Hmm that's an idea... Do you mind telling me what your florist is charging you? Im trying to figure out approximate prices for what I want (either all gerbers or gerbers and roses) so that maybe I can at least get the bo-k's made by a doff florist.

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
I am using gerber daisies for my wedding next July and many odf my friends have used them, bnone of them had any problems with wilting. If you really want them I would just go for it. I think you are freaking yourself out a little bit over the weather thing. Yes gerbers can't live in heat for any length of time but youshould be fine for the 1 day of your wedding.

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
If you still want the BOKs to be gerbers-- ask how long they can hold up-- you just need them to hold up for the first couple of hours--once the party has started howmany bridesmaids walk around with their bouquets?

Re: Ok Officially REALLY REALLY sad
ok, as a last ditch gerber daisy....
http://weddings.theknot.com/odb/themes/realweddings/detailview.aspx?id=13116&type=3&colors=Pink&pageIndex=4 It would probably even look intentional, with the paper parasols and all.... and then in the reception, you can keep the real-deal.....
