Okay, now I'm crying (vent)

Okay, now I'm crying (vent)

I just went to an internist to check my cholesterol because my gyno won't let me take the pill anymore unless I get clearance (insert 'whatever' here). Well, it was really nice to be told that I'm 'obese' (I don't care that it's only by 6 lbs) and that I should be under 135 for my height.

I'm SO frustrated and sad because I have NEVER been below 135 even when I ate right, ran 5 miles a day, and played 2 sports in high school and college. I just feel like there's something wrong with me and that a normal person who ate the way I do should not be this heavy. I've had success with eating modification in the past, but never to where I'm under 135! I've had my thyroid checked already and I don't know what else to do.

What is your height?

I'm actually 5'3 and a half, but most people think I'm taller for some reason (5'5' or 5'6')

That is crazy! According to my doctor (and i know this b/c i am the same height as you and I checked her height/weight chart the last time I was there) the healthy weight for someone that is 5'3' is like 107-141 lbs!! So being a half inch taller than 5'3', it should even be a few pounds more!! So honestly, I think that your doctor sounds wrong!! And plus - I do happen to be under 135 lbs - BUT there were times when I was not...and I never considered myself obese!!

Don't get down on yourself about numbers! Your doctor's numbers do not seem correct, and plus - there are so many other factors...muscle weighs more than fat!

That makes me feel a lot better. I don't know about these numbers because at 150 a lot of people told me I looked too thin and my best friend's mother was convinced I had an eating disorder. Maybe certain weights look different on on different people. I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing with South Beach and see how it goes.

I'm 5'3' and weigh 120-125 and when I signed up for Ladies Workout Express the worker said, 'Yeah, you could stand to lose a few!' I think it is all about your body fat percentage anyway when it comes to obesity. I lost 15 inches my first month at the gym, and lost 3% body fat. My weight didn't change too much. I just toned what I had, which is why I don't think the weight should dictate obesity. My cousin played rugby in college and was in great shape and very muscular, but weighed quite a bit more than me, but it was all muscle. Her calves were the size of my thighs (well, maybe not--my thighs are my bad area!). I had been relatively inactive since playing lacrosse in college. It's really hard to get back into the shape I was in then.

Point is, don't listen to them! I feel like so many people who already look great on here feel pressure to lose for the wedding. I know I do, and I never really felt self-conscious before.

I'm sorry but your doctor is an IDIOT. I would find someone new
You are by no means obese at that weight! What was he thinking?!?!? Is he in the military or something? When DH was in the Marine Corps they told him that he was overweight. It had nothing to do with how much he actually weighed, but it had to do with his waist to neck measurement ratio or something like that. Meanwhile, DH was a stringbean back then! I've seen pictures!

But seriously, don't listen to your moron of a doctor. You're just fine at that weight!

The Dr. Is DUMB!
I am 5'5 and when I was skinny a few years ago I weighed between 140-150 and I wore a size SIX....sometimes an 8, But at 145 and a size 6 , people were ALWAYS telling me I was too thin, now I want to get down to 135 and everyone is telling me not to, I will look too small...so Dont you shed a TEAR! Im so mad at that DR!!!

Re: Okay, now I'm crying (vent)

I agree with everybody above completely!!! It is not the number on the scale. PLEASE don't listen to your doctor and get upset. It depends on your body-type and how much muscle you have. At 5'5, my weight has not changed all that much, but I have fluctuated between a size 6 to just fitting in 10s depending on how much I am working out.

Please do NOT get discouraged, you are by no means obese!!!!

Thank you girls for being so sweet. The good news is that the stress of being called 'obese' made me lose 2 lbs from yesterday
