I was in sticker shock today when we went to La Bon Boulangerie bakery to pick out our cake. I thought the cake was included and it is if you want a butter cream cake either chocolate or vanilla with , chocolate or vanilla filling with cascading flowers. I was not prepared to spend an additional $500 for a fondant cake that is red velvet. Just wanted to share

Re: Old Field Club Brides
Yeah I heard from another OFC bride that fondant is an upgrade and would be expensive.
Could you also get whipped cream if you want on the outside? (I'm not sure if I want butter cream or whipped cream).
Also, do they have any other fillings that are included besides vanilla and chocolate?? Is that chocolate mousse?? Also, do you know if they have cannoli as a filling without an extra charge?
Finally, are the cascading flowers edible? Or do they use real flowers? Thanks! Sorry for all the questions!!

no anything else would be an upgrade, even canoli. I'm not sure if it is whip cream but the other option available wouldn't be able to stay out all night, so I crossed that off the list. The flowers are edible but they would be butter cream. Also they didn't have an pictures of the butter cream cakes only one and it was not attractive looking. They said they are a specialty bakery and people upgrade. I know they have an excellent reputation but I was not expecting to pay more money today.

I figured whatever was included would be pretty basic...out of curiosity, what did the $500 get you?

Re: Old Field Club Brides
Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with a plain butter cream cake and have my florist decorate it with real flowers. I can't imagine adding several hundred more dollars to my budget and my florist told me she can decorate my cake for $35 if I want her to.

The fondant ribbon will be in a shimmery silver to go with our colors
Just out of curiousity, do you have any idea how much gum paste flowers go for??
eta: I just noticed from your profile that our engagement dates were only one day apart from each other!

Re: Old Field Club Brides
yup they are hand made you can pick any cake and filling so we chose red velvet with a cream cheese filling....it would have neen a few hundred just to change the type of cake so we decided to get the cake we wanted...but i'm thinking i should have just went with the house cake because i cant justify the price no matter how hard i'm trying...needless to say i am downing the wine tonight

Your cake is going to be gorgeous though!!! That's not so bad that for everything the total cost was $500. I thought originally you meant that it was $500 just to upgrade to fondant, but that it would be even more to decorate with edible flowers, ribbon, etc. I will see how we are doing with our budget as we get closer to our wedding because I would love to get my dream cherry blossom cake that I have in my album (first pic). Buttttt it really depends how we are doing with saving as the wedding gets closer.

Bring in pictures when you go that's what we did. They will pretty much make any cake you want for around that price They really don't nickel and dime you for little extras it depends on the labor that goes into the cake and from what i was told fondant is labor intensive and so are making the flowers..

The fondant that La bonne Boulongerie uses is TO DIE FOR! seriously, it is amazing. It is very labor intensive.... watch one of those ultimate wedding cakes shows and you can see it is really difficult to work with

You think it would be an upgrade or more expensive to get cupcakes? I like this idea but I don't think I'd pay more.

I'm not sure...we didn't discuss cupcakes as an option. I think it comes down to labor and the type of cake.
