OMG - Carpeting costs alot!! and Q

I was shocked to find out how much it costs - and how many choices there are!!!!!!!

Textured, berber, plush, frieze, multitone...nylon, polyester....this padding, that padding... EEK!

We are totally overwhelmed and we kind of need to decide since we want to install before we move in.

There's a wholesaler in Brooklyn near DH's firehouse so he's going to stop by there. Someone else in the firehouse said that they got carpeting there since he was a FF in the area they sold to him.

Doesnt help with the decision.

ANY OPINIONS ON THE DIFFERENT TYPES?

DH likes the plush but the footmarks and stuff show alot, no? Anyone with experience on the frieze?

My mother said to put indoor/outdoor carpeting in Luke's room. I don't think so! I dont care if he's a kid, he's getting a nice rug too-albeit I'll try to be somewhat more practical but i/o carpet???

have you looked at home depot? they have fairly cheap prices on carpet and they install too..

We just got berber installed in our bedroom last week. It last longer and it is great quality.

I put the thick Berber in my upstairs bedrooms and I love it. It feels great to walk on and I am sorry I didn't put it in my room. The best carpet is by Karastan. It is very expensive.

We bought Karastan carpets for our bedrooms. It is more $$, but we wanted nice plush carpets in the bedrooms. For the stairs and hallway, we decided on a short pile, tight weave pindot design (b/c of high traffic) and we are very happy so far. For the den, we went w/a neutral Berber b/c again, it is high traffic and Paul spends alot of time playing in there. It is definitely more durable, but it still looks very nice.

I would make the decisions about the type of carpet based on how the rooms will be used. Then picks colors/designs. As far as padding - usually plush carpets have a slightly thicker padding than Berber. But, the padding choices aren't difficult - you usually just get what the carpet place offers for the type of carpet you are buying.

Just FYI - we used G. Fried in Westbury and were very happy w/there selection, service and installation. Good luck!

You might want to stop in Carpet Depot on Sunrise Highway its either in Wantagh or Seaford. They have a good amount of carpet in stock and they can deliver and install the next day. We purchased a really nice plush for our bedroom from them when we moved in. I love a cushy bedroom carpet. For the den and entire basement we have a nice patterned berber. Its a light color but has been doing well against my nephews repeated red juice spills and chocolate attacks.

Try going to carpet store and see if they have remnants.
We bought one and had it isntalled, and it was sheap..and it was a good quality carpet.
Hubby's friend who installed it said this is a remnant??

We put down a thick berber upstairs and really like it. The plush shows all the footprints and that would make me nuts! I'd be vaccuuming a few times a day! Montauk Rug and Carpet had some great remnants and they were very large remnants too. We did our two upstairs bedrooms, upstairs hall and long stair way (two small landings) with a remnant they had.

Elizabeth, I have frieze carpeting.

Elizabeth, I just had frieze installed in our l.room and both bedrooms. We love it! I like the texture and the cut holds form well so it doesn't look walked on even when we've walked on it. (I HATE it when carpeting looks 'messy' and flat). It isn't as cushy as the plush carpeting but it is soft and feels good under our feet. It was a little more money than other types but we've been very happy. It holds up really well. We have lily White for the bedrooms and Bassett for the lroom.

We bought the frieze at HD in Coram. The sales person was very helpful. He even let me bring the big samples home so I could really get a feel for how it would be once it was installed.

The stainmaster worked well too. Our kitty tossed her cookies the other day and it cleaned up in one wipe, no staining.

We upgraded the padding. US Carpet did the installation and we were very pleased. We tore up the existing carpeting and took care of throwing away the left overs to save $$.

FM me if you have any other questions.

Re: Elizabeth, I have frieze carpeting.

Karen - I thought the frieze looked very nice. The guy at HD in East Meadow was all discouraging me. He said 'Nobody is buying it' but I only saw a little sample so it's hard to tell. Then I saw a remnant today in a light brown - it looked gorgeous!

Diane - Good advice, Today I went to a local flooring place - my Mom is a big remnants shopper. Lots of stuff. I saw a nice carpet for Luke's room in the exact gray color I want. DH's friend does carpet installation on the side so he is coming to do a pro measuring of all the rooms on Friday and then we will see. I'm getting educated....

Thanks everyone! I'm telling you, this board is a Godsend!!

Re: Elizabeth, I have frieze carpeting.

Odd...when I went in and placed my order, the sales rep said someone was in there that weekend ordering it for her home (she gave him a hard time because he pronounced frieze wrong - LOL).

But that's OK...even if it isn't very popular, I think its great.

If you can get yourself a big piece bring it home, take off your shoes and walk around on it. (really - I think that is an important test). I think you'll be pleased.

Good luck. I know how stressful this all can be...but you're a smart cookie and you'll catch on real quick!

Feel free to FM me if I can be of more help!

Re: Elizabeth, I have frieze carpeting.

Hi, I just wanted to add a couple of things. When it comes to padding, get the upgraded padding if you can swing it. IMO it makes a big difference. I also wanted to say that FH and I chose berber in two areas of the house. We got an upgraded berber for the family room since that room is used A LOT and it also leads out to the deck (higher traffic). We've been really happy with it and it looks great. We also put a regular grade berber in our finished basement. As the other ladies recommended above, get samples of the color/style you want and bring them home. Sometimes the carpet colors look different on the display wall/book than they do on the floor in your house with your lighting (i.e. some 'off-whites' look more yellow in certain lighting).

Good luck decorating!

Re: OMG - Carpeting costs alot!! and Q

I found a place on Sunrise Highway in Seaford called Kelley's that had tons of remnants and lots of rolls in stock as well. We found 3 gorgeous carpets for our bedrooms (we decided to keep the living room and hall carpet-its in very good shape) and it was alot less that I was even being quoted at Home Depot. They are installing it Wednesday.

Definitely pays to hunt around. I would definitely recommend this place. We were potentially having our own person install it and they owner of the carpet store was great - he didnt try to push the installation on us. He kept giving up prices based on just rug & padding and then with installation on each one we looked at. He also is doing a restretch in the dining room corner at no additional charge - and gave us a break on the whole price when I mentioned that we will probably be doing the downstairs soon as well.
