He is paying for a big part of our reception, but not all... FH and I are contributing a LOT of time and money... FHs parents did not contribute anything financially but have contributed in other ways.
This is how we want to word our invites:
Lori and Matthew together with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Domenic XXXXXX and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth XXXXX request the pleasure of your company at a reception following their marriage in Florence, Italy
Saturday October 2 1:00 pm Harrison House Glen Cove, New York
My dad is mad that he is not getting enough billing. he wants a very traditional old-fashioned wording so he looks more like the host of the party. We see it as a way to include everyone and give respect to all parents. What do you think?

Re: OMG I BROKE OUT IN HIVES I AM SO MAD
Would wording it a bit different help the situation? Like
Mr & Mrs. Your parents request the honor of you presence at the wedding reception of their daughter
You to FH
Son of Mr & Mrs. His parents
Saturday Oct. 2 One o'clock pm Harrison house Glen Cove, NY
Ceremony to take place on XXDateXX in Florence italy
Just a suggestion. Maybe your dad will like that him and only him and your mom are at the top!! Hope it works out

Boop thanks so much for your response.... fascinating idea about listing the ceremony afterwards.... i have never seen that. I was trying to keep only one date on the invite to avoid confusion, but that could work.
I also don't like the 'daughter of' and 'son of ' thing... am i being difficult ? LOL

I am on your side, the side that says you are beginning a new life with your FH and you want to start out on the right foot with you, your parents, and your in-laws. Tell your dad you really appreciate everything he has done, but you and your FH want the invitations worded this way. End of story.
Then at the rehearsal dinner or some other event, you can make a toast along the lines of 'without you Dad our wedding could not be the day we dreamed of' or something.
His pride sounds hurt, but he has to chill.

I was thinking about the toast thing too....
Also, I dont see the party host as purely a financial contributer... I too am a financial contributer, as well as busting my a$$ to plan it all and, most importantly I am the BRIDE!! Doesn't that make me a host??

YES!! It is YOUR party! Not your dad's! (Though it is very nice and generous of him to contribute financially)

Re: OMG I BROKE OUT IN HIVES I AM SO MAD
My parents (father especially) are very concerned about 'how it looks to others' especially in the big italian family... if they talk about the 'envelopes' one more time I'm gonna jump out a window.

Ah yes, the Big Italian Family wedding...well, look at it this way, how you handle this one may dicate much of how your parents treat other events in your life. A friend of mine from a BIF is now arguing with her family b/c they want to invite 120 people - yes, 120 women actually - to her baby shower. All about the envelopes. She says if she didn't let them get away with the big wedding this would never be happening.

Re: OMG I BROKE OUT IN HIVES I AM SO MAD
Lori - not only do we share a name, but we share parents too!!!!! My parents had the same problem because we put on our invitations that both sets of parents invited everyone to the marriage of their children. well, my parents paid for most of the reception and so they thought they should get top billing..... but they only told me that after the invitations went out, so it was a little late. had we known, we could have made the change and made them happy... we had a huge argument about it and i still don't think they're quite over it!!
