FH and I are dying to get our apartment rented..any suggestions to how we should advertise..i am a little nervous about craig's list...did anyone do that before? advice please!

When I was looking for apts, I checked Craig's List, but was a little creeped out searching on there and never came across anything good. I recommend advertising in newspapers - like Newsday, which I think also lists on apartments.com. Also, maybe go to local colleges or grad schools and put postings up on bulletin boards. And definitely tell everyone you know that you have a place to rent out and get them to spread it by word of mouth!

I recommend the pennysaver. I think that is where most people look. Prior to getting my house...I lived in basement apt in N. Massapequa. My Old LL told when I was looking she was going to interview everyone & then pick the best person suited for her house. She picked me!! I would suggest doing the same...so many horror stories.

Keep in mind that you never know who your neighbors are since you just moved in. We have a basement apt in our house which we have yet to rent because scopping out the street first. When your the new one on the block ya never know who your friend is...and certainly don't want to be turned in........be careful.

What about listing through a realtor? I believe any extra expense is paid by the tenant.

if not, they can catch you. they caught me last time, and we are now in court every month and going thru hell.
if you dont mind me asking, where is the apt, and how much per month? we actually might be selling our home and going to renting again. it's too much $ to own a house, and we both make good salaries!

Yes, it's crazy expensive... although we have apt in our home, we are scared to rent. Also, if tenant doesn't pay it will be hard to get them out.

we got ours on craigslist and our landlords told us that they were so scared/skeptical of doing it on there bc you dunno who you're gonna come across... but hey, they got us so it cant be all that bad LOL
PS: i saw the pics in your album and im sooooo upset that it wasnt ready sooner... we def wouldve taken it!
