On-line dating

On-line dating

After reading one of the other threads, it seems that a few people tried on-line dating (and some are even marrying them!)
How many have tried it and what did you think of it?
I actually tried it, and although I was very selective with who I actually met, I was pleasantly surprised with those that I did.

Re: On-line dating

I went on 2 dates with guys I met online. One was a stalker freak. The other posted a fake picture. I am definitely not a fan, although it makes me question my experiences when I hear of people finding one another online.

Maybe there is something wrong with me. But I found FH so I guess that is all that matters!

I tried it - met some nice, normal guys, but none of them worked out - they just weren't my type. I met FH online, but not through a dating service. We met in a college class online.

Re: On-line dating

I joined Matchmaker.com for a two week free trial. During that time I got over 200 responses. I wrote back and forth to a few of them, but was extremely, extremely selective. I only agreed to give one of them my phone number, and then only after weeks of speaking on the phone, did I agree to meet him in person. I met him at a very crowded movie theater for safety's sake. That was 2.5 years ago. We're getting married June 1, 2003!

Either I was very lucky, or just extremely picky and selective. Choosing only 1 out of 200 men is definitely being careful!! I think it was a little of both--I was very selective, and very lucky.

I know other people who have tried online dating, some of the dates are okay, some are just nutty, and others they end up dating for a while. I'm the first person I know of personally who is marrying someone they met online. But I've heard other girls on this board say that's how they met their FHs. It's definitely worth a try, but be very careful and use your head. Be smart!

FSIL found FBIL online. She actually drove 5 hours to meet him while telling FIL's that she was at a friends house (NOT VERY SMART!!!!) They dated for 5 months, decided to get married 8 months later. They are still together but personally I think they rushed it and will decide to break up in the next 1-2 years.

Re: On-line dating

My FH best friend meets his girlfriends all the time online. I always thought it was a little weird because most people make things up but it has worked for him. Although he hasn't met Mrs. Right yet he has met some very nice girls. One he was engaged to but it didn't work out and another one came up from Delaware with her daughter only after a couple of months of knowing him and is living with him now but we think they are headed to splitsville.

Actually he had another girl a few years back move from PA to come live with him only after knowing him a couple of months too. That I think is strange. Would you relocate everything for someone you met online a few months ago?

met FI on match.com. i loved it! you just have to use your head - meet in a public place the first time, use your women's initution, etc.

Probably not! Sometimes people do strange things, or take unwise (don't want to say stupid) risks. Then they wonder why things 'always mess up' in their lives. Go figure...

I met Dh online as well. As long as you are careful about meeting in a pulic place, I dont think theres anything to worry about. And I think this holds true for any first date.

I have met people at parties or bars and thought they were nice the first time and then meet them for a date and they were nuts (a couple of times scary nuts). I dont think the percentage changes with people you meet online vs in person.

Re: On-line dating

I met my DH in an AOL chat room (LI over 30) almost 7 years ago. He sent me an IM and after we went back and forth that way for about an hour, he gave me his number and I called him. I blocked my number so that it wouldn't come up on caller ID if he had it. We actually talked online and on the phone for about 3 months before we met in person. During that time we developed a wonderful friendship and learned quite a bit about each other. When we did finally meet in person it was at a restaurant, just to be safe for both of us. We even went on a vacation together (sharing expenses) as friends. It wasn't until we came back home that he finally asked me out on a date! The rest, as they say is history. Had it not been for the computer we probably never would have met, since he lived in Oyster Bay and I lived in Medford.

For me it was a terrific way to start out because there was no pressure at all. Since I had just started dating again, after being married for 18 years and then taking 2 years off (this was my 'Men S U C K ' phase), I really wanted to go slow. It sure worked for me.

I think that as long as you are really careful and use your head it can be a wonderful way to meet someone that you might not have met otherwise.

I meet my FI on line almost 6 years ago, and we wer not dating, both of us were in ICQ and he was looking for a job in Venezuela (I lived there back then) and we developed a great friendship. It was not until almost a year after I moved to USA that we began dating (we even lived in different states) ... we have a couple of friends who married people who they met on line, and the are very happy ... so why not? if you are careful and find the right one, it is great!

Re: On-line dating

I met my FH through ny.matchmaker.com.

I must have met about 10 guys over a 7 year period, whether it be through IRC or matchmaking websites.
