We went over our finances this weekend and realized that we can't afford ANYTHING in Ny AND the dog is huge hinderance. Looks like we'll be living upstairs in Grandma's house for about 6 months for a whopping $150 a month to save money. I was so sad.....

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
I can totally sympathize with you...I live at home still and pay a fortune to do so but it is just so unaffordable on LI. I don't know how FH and I will be able to afford it here

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
I think everyone is in the same boat, that it is just to expensive to buy anything on your own here in NY unless you want to live in an undesirable neighborhood. The prices have to come down eventually or nobody will be able to live on the island unless both the husband and wife make at least 6 figures each. I feel your pain, after we are married I think we may have to move to florida, unless something comes through for us.

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
You're not alone! It's tough being a young couple on LI right now. Especially a young couple paying for their own wedding which most of us are doing. Apartments are ridiculously priced, houses are insanely priced and weddings are just highway robbery, but we all pay it!
FH and I live in a basement apartment in my grandparents' house which we pay $600/month for. Separately he was paying $750 for a basement and I was paying $850 for a basement, so financially this is clearly a better arrangement, but my sanity is another story.
I stress alot over where we will live after the wedding. I certainly don't want to be in my grandparents' basement, I don't want a crappy house in a nice area or a nice house in a crappy area! As sad as it makes me to leave our friends and family, it looks like we'll be moving off LI after the wedding unless the housing market changes.

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
Thank You all for reassuring me that I am not alone....We are planning on moving out of state for financial reasons as well as sanity reasons (we just plain ol don't like living in NY anymore). Who can beat $150 rent in a house w/ C/A/C, the upstairs is ours--essentially it's 2 bedrooms, but one will be like a living room and our own bathroom. I can cook downstairs and do our laundry there as well.....plus Grandma is not alone. My parents have a HUGE room in the house, but it's the family/hang out room, but would make for a nice studio....I doubt I could convince them to shift everything. I will keep you all posted....

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
Hang in there...it will all work out. FH would love to move out of NY...but I'm too much of a chicken to leave my family and friends. Practically everyone I know lives on LI...we live in NJ (only 1.5 hours away). I can't imagine living any further...but I know that we can get so much more for the money elsewhere. I bought a condo before I met FH, but it was expensive and I could probably have a mansion somewhere else. Good luck...you won't have to live with Grandma forever...

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
Im trying hard not to think of it.
I don't know what we'll do. Jim has a job in Suffolk so moving out of LI or NY is sorta hard to manage. Right now we're still living with his family. Don't know how I'll feel about that after the wedding. Bad enough we're already married and living there. It rubs my pride the wrong way.
They leave us alone and we really do know it's financially a good arrangement but Im used to living on my own.
It's tough.
ETA: We pay $250 for the privilage of living there. And honestly, no real privacy. Old house... thin walls. *sigh*

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
kptoys...Thank You for the offer, but the drive isn't what stinks...the price is out of our league. I guess $150 a month is too great to pass up....we still have a lot of talking to do.

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
I was living on my own for a while and had to move back to my moms house to save for the wedding, I love living at home because of the money I save but sometimes I wish I was out on my own again. But my fiance owns a house but his mother lives with him so that is hard.

We also moved back with our parents to save money. We are paying for the wedding ourselves, and I have no idea where we're going to live after the wedding. But we are saving so much money by living at home right now.

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
I know how all of you feel!!! That's why my DH and I moved to North Carolina. Well, we weren't married at the time that we moved. We've been here now for almost 4.5 years and we're loving it! We weren't even 22 yrs old at the time. We didn't have jobs when we came down, we knew someone down here, stayed with them for 2 months, and then got our own place. There was no way we could afford to live on LI. Not even now! We've been renting 2BR apartments down here for $700-$800/month with 1300sf. We just rented a house and moved into it this weekend for $1050/month. It's only 6 years old, 3BR/2.5BA, wood burning fireplace, vaulted ceilings, 2 story, and a privacy fenced in yard for our 2 dogs. It's also in a beautiful neighborhood. You can't beat that! We have friends up there renting basement apartments for $1400 a month and only 800 sf. I could never do that! Anyway, I know it's hard moving and being away from family and friend, but it's totally worth it!

We are in the same boat, except we refuse to leave LI . . . I try not to think about it too much, but I am worried . . . I don't see a house in the near future, that is for sure.

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
we are very much looking forward to leaving NY....not sure where we'll end up..maybe GA cuz he has his sister and her family down there. We feel like the NY lifestyle is not what we prefer, and we would like for me to be able to stay home when it's time to become parents. That can't happen in NY right now. My family doesn't mind....they'd rather see us have a good life than struggle to be close to them.
I really relate to this problem. It seems impossible to settle down in a nice house on Long Island these days. It is just too expensive! We have been considering moving out of state, but I'm just not sure where we should go for pretty much the same reasons as all of you. I just don't want to leave our family and friends. My FH seems to have an easier time with the concept. It sure feels good to know that I am not alone in this!!!

Re: On the verge of homelessness.....
I was living in West Palm Beach, Florida for 2 years before returning to LI. I had my son and wanted him to be closer to family. We were paying $900 a mo. for a 2 bedroom apt. It wasn't all that big but we were on our own. Here we are with FH's father. We pay $450 a month for a 2 bedrooms and use of the house. Not bad at all huh? Well, the lack of privacy kills me. We have been on our own for 10 years and now have to share a house with someone. It is so hard. Especially when you are trying to raise a child! Well, my Fh was in an car accident and was hurt pretty bad. His settlement may be the only thing that can get us a house in LI. Other than that we are doomed. I try to keep positive. One day. Good luck ladies!
