? on Yougart

Why is it OK to give yougart which is made w/ whole milk but not the actual whole milk itself?

Formula/breastmilk has more calorie/fat components compared to whole milk during the 1st year of life, they need the extra energy that comes from either of these 2 sources. yogurt is just IN ADDITION TO the baby's fluid intake.

Ya know I wondered the same thing myself. I was never really sure because of the whole milk allergy thing why whole milk is ok. Maybe you should ask your doc

It doesn't have to do with the milk being 'whole', it has to do with the milk-protein that is found in the milk that casues an allergic reaction. This protein is found in LOTS of foods, especially biter biscuits, cereals, fomula, yogurt, cheese, butter and other 'first food' items. They are sometimes just disguised with fancy names such as casein, whey, lactate, lactic acid, etc, these are all forms of the milk protein-causing allergen. Usually these allergic reactions show up pretty early on since infants are usually exposed to items with these proteins by the 6th month. By the time an infant reaches their 1st boirthday they have already consumed tons of whole milk products.

Thank you emilain!
That was very informative & cleared it right up for me. So, at 9 months it's safe to give some yobaby then.

no problem! I have a daughter with a milk allergy, so we have seen specialists and have dealt with all these feeding issues. So..yes, bring on the yogurt! Have fun, I think I started my first born on yougurt at 5 months (she does not have a milk allergy)
