Online Colleges

Has anyone attended or know anyone that has attended those online colleges, like The University Of Phoenix?

I've taken online classes through Suffolk CC and would like to take more. TIA! - Sandy

I would be careful with University of Phoenix.. especially because I heard they aren't recognized in New York State... I would make sure they are accredited here..

My cousin and her BF both take classes there, becuase they are busy professionals. They've had no problems with it.

I take some online classes, Ive heard nothing bad about 'Empire State' college, they are based in NY...what about them?
Here's my question...what really happens after you graduate? Are those degress taken as seriously? I would love to continue doing online, I get better grades, it's more convenient but I wonder about the final outcome....

I've spoken with people in the business world, and they're taken a lot less seriously than normal universities. plus I think U of Phoenix had a scancdal a while back. I don't remember 100% what it was. If I were an employr, given the same credentials otherwise, I'd pick the person from the brick and mortal uni,

It may depend on the industry and size of the company too. I used to work for Pillsbury, just before they were purchased by General Mills, and at least in the Marketing department, the word was that you not only needed a Masters degree, but you needed to have it from the 'right' school. They tended to favor a few specific schools.

Re: Online Colleges

Well I was thinking of finishing my BS this way and then obviosuly a Masters would need to be through a more accredited school? I am thinking of a 3 yr masters program but the school is so far it would take longer then doing itonline..what bout that, once you get a Masters dont they really just look at the school the Masters came from?

I'd be vary wary of them. My father is an investigator and he's constantly having to investigate these 'schools'.

Some regular schools offer online classes. Stony Brook University is one of them. Your degree will be from Stony Brook and no one would know that you took online classes. If you can find a 'real' school that offers online classes/degrees I think this will be your best bet to have your degree taken seriously.

Im going to look into stony brook..I would not neccesarily need to take ALL classes on line but if I could take a good portion of BS classes that way it would help tremendously! I did though hear good things about Empire State College, I thought they were thought of as a 'real' school...anyone heard of them?

Re: Online Colleges

I know A LOT about this (worked at Stony Brook first as an Advisor)... Empire State is a part of the SUNY system, but all courses are internet or correspondence. Stony Brook does any undergrad courses online, but you can complete an entire Master of Arts degree online now after you complete a Bachelor degree. Many SUNY schools do offer courses online--check out this site for all the schools and available programs. I know people who have gotten degrees from U Phoenix because they were reimbursed from their employer (a couple of my Computer Associates friends got their MBAs this way...). I would recommend a SUNY school first though--the transcript will not indicate that the courses were taken online (of course, if you are living here and taking courses through Buffalo, they can probably figure it out!), and the tuition will generally be cheaper than the private, out of state schools. Some courses are more difficult online (I am taking Advanced Graduate Statistics online, and taking math online is hard--you basically have to teach yourself everything and just email back the homework assignments... ). Actually, I am on here procrastinating doing homework! Any more questions, FM me...

Re: Online Colleges

One more thing, U of Phoenix is regionally accredited, so most schools (any SUNY definitely) will give you credit for their courses. Check out the residency requirements at different colleges--at Stony Brook you only need to complete 36 credits on campus to complete a degree (assuming you meet the major requirements, general education, 120 credit minimum, etc.). If you plan well, you could transfer in the rest from online schools, and complete the degree at SB with only 36 credits in person.

Re: Online Colleges

My hubby works for U of Phoenix. They currently have over 100,000 online students enrolled. This school is 100% accredited. For certain things it is not (like NYS teaching is not, but NJ Teaching it is). If you go to school online you are invited to go to Phoenix and go to graduation like any other campus student. As far as not looking as good as a regular school..I can't say. I think online college is still a little iffy in some employers eyes but I think the stigma is going away. It really is a good program and lots of people just don't have the time to go to a campus for 2 or 3 years. I say explore all your opportunities!

Empire State is the most respected. It's a SUNY school.

Re: Online Colleges

I know for University of Phoenix's MBA program you don't even need to take the GMAT to get in and they accept 85% of people that apply- that's why I wouldn't take them too seriously- it doesn't seem like they have any selectivity... people are getting MBAs that probably shouldn't be and are dilluting the quality of the degree...

and I don't think University of Phoenix would ever be able to compete with even middle of the road MBA programs at Baruch, Rutgers, Seton Hall, etc.

Re: Online Colleges

Well, I don't know if that is any less selective than, say, a Dowling MBA (not knocking it, but I know the acceptance and graduation rates and it is none too competitive...). Bottom line, these schools may not be too selective, but if you are applying for a job and you have a degree and the other person doesn't, it may give you the advantage to get the position.
