I blocked rooms at 2 hotels...1 I did in February, and 1 i did at the end of May for our mid-November 2008 wedding
definitely 8-12 months in advance
i started looking about 10 months before, but didn't book the rooms until 6-8 months before.
i booked my rooms already..... most of my guests are OOT and there are only 2 major hotels in the area so I wanted to make sure I grabbed them.
I did it over a year in advance. Some places have a max time out they will go. You will get cheaper rates for further in advance and if there are limited hotels in the area, I suggest sooner. Our hotel stopped serving alcohol but after we signed the contract, so they have to honor it. Had we booked later, there would have been no booze afterwards.
