Opening gifts at the shower?

Opening gifts at the shower?

So my sister tells me that they do not plan on having me open gifts at my shower. This is fine with me, as I personally find the process of sitting for 2 hours watching someone else open gifts kind of boring and tedious. Plus I like the idea of bringing them and FH and I opening them together.

But I am wondering what my guests will think. Will they be expecting it, and feel insulted if I don't open their gift at the shower? Does anyone have strong opinions on this either way? The BP apparently has other things to do to pass the time instead of opening gifts.

TIA

honestly unless it was told to your guests before I think some peopl emmight be upset that you are not opening them in front of them... the biddies like to see your expression when you open their hand knit towel holder/ toilet seat cover/ kitty litter box coverup....

i guess it depends on your guests, but I have a feeling people will want to see youopen their gifts

People will have opinions (and some may even share them) if you don't open gifts at the shower ... its just something people expect to see ... and they'll be very surprised if they are not told before hand.

What if they did one of those display showers, where people are supposed to wrap in clear?

Can you have your sister tell the guests to wrap the stuff in celophane? A few people did something like that. This way people can see what you got displayed on the table, but you won't have to open them.

Thats a great idea. Unfortunately I think the invites went out already...but maybe she can tell them as people respond.

i'm not sure how that would sit with people.. b/c it is expected and stuff.. but wrapping it in cello sounds like a plan..

Re: Opening gifts at the shower?

the only reason why i am opening them is because my guests would be insulted....at my sisters shower a few months ago i was practically throwing gifts at her so she'd hurry up.....she got like 12 microwaves...how many ooohss and ahhhhs can you hear about an egg poacher?? lol

To make it fun, we did the old school game of writing down everything she said as she opened her gifts and then read it outloud as 'things *** will say the night of her wedding'

oh wow
i thought it was bigger
how do you use this??
billy will looooooooove this
does this fit?
wow thats huge

etc etc etc it def. made it interesting....

Re: Opening gifts at the shower?

This is definitely a touchy situation. For me, I could care less about seeing someone open the coffee maker I bought them off their registry. However, a lot of older people live for seeing someone open their gifts and display it at the shower. So I definitely think they'd be insulted.

I know amongst me and my friends, we usually dread going to a shower and watching someone open gifts for 2 hrs. But it seems like most older people love that stuff. And even if the old people think it's the boring part of the shower, they still expect the bride to do it cause it's a tradition.

The cellophane idea is a good idea, but I know you said invites already went out. Maybe ask your family if they can spread the cellophane idea by word of mouth or email.

If you have a feeling that there will be a group of people who will get mad about you not opening the gifts, and you know it'll bother you, I'd say just bite the bullet and open the gifts. Even though it can be boring watching someone open gifts, it does pass the time. Definitely do what you can to speed it up, such as having the bridal party basically opening it up for you and just passing it to you, don't read the card - let the bridal party tell you who it's from, and try not to pose too long for pictures.

As much as people complain while the bride is opening them they really want to see your reaction when you open theirs. ALSO! payback for all the times you had too :)
