Opinion on NYC Neighborhoods

hi ladies, i need to move out of fh's apt and am looking for a place in the NYC neighborhood. in terms of accessibility, safety and average cost of living, which area would you recommend?

Hmmmmm........That's a hard one to vote for. You are asking for several different things in one neighborhood.

You see your options have one or two of these criteria, but not all.

I don't know anything about Brooklyn, but Queens I know.

Woodside is close to all trains and buses, but as far as safety...not the greatest of neighborhoods. I lived in Jackson Heights for years and FI lived in Woodside growing up. Rents are about average 1000 and up for a 1- 2 bedroom

Forest Hills is very nice and close to trains and buses depending on where you are, but a bit more expensive.

I personally wouldn't move to Jersey and I think the Upper East Side is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

These are JMO!

What about areas like Kew Gardens, Auburndale Douglaston and Glen Oaks?

Again, it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a fast commute into NYC by train or LIRR--these are good. If you don't drive, these places I just mentioned are not convienient.

A friend of mine just moved to a very sketchy area because it takes her 15 min by train to get into work. She rather have a short commute. I on the other hand, live further away from Manhattan, but love where Iive. I think it really depends on what is most important to you.

Sorry to hear that you have to move out.

Good Luck!

I voted for the UES, but it isn't cheap compared to the boroughs. It costs more, but I think it's worth it. I'm a bit biased though since I live there.

The UES is relatively cheaper than other parts of Manhattan. You usually get more space for the same price as other parts of the city.

Re: Opinion on NYC Neighborhoods

Hi gals

Thanks so much for all your opinions and advice!!! I'm looking to rent with not too difficult of a commute into the city for school and work.

Ok, here's what I've found so far:
1. a newly built place in Woodside near the Woodside stop on the 7 train, closer to the city and it's cheap but i get the feeling that parts of the area can be kinda sketchy

2. a few nice places in Forest Hills but not as nice as the one in Woodside and it's further from the city although the area seems really safe and the rent is kinda pricey

3. places in brooklyn are cheap and close to the city but really run down and doesn't seem as safe as Queens

4. a place in Jersey City which is really cheap, close to Path so quick commute to city and pretty safe but really run down

that's the result of my hunt so far. what do u gals think?

I voted for Forest Hills. I'm from Queens and personally I think Woodside has some sketchy parts. Park Slope you'd have a much shorter commute, but it would definitely be more $$$$.

What about Middle Village? That's near Forest Hills but would definitely be cheaper.

I live in Howard Beach and take the A train to work everyday. It takes me an hour door to door (I get off at W. 14th Street- it's about 45-50 minutes on the train).

Where do you work in NYC? If you work in midtown then northern Queens is so much better as far as commuting time then southern Queens (where I live).

If you want to know about any Queens neighborhoods, send me an FM!!

You could probably get something not too expensive in Forest Hills. It may take you a while, but perhaps you can find it. I currently live there myself.

Also, instead of Woodside, I would move to Sunnyside. It actually closer to the city than Woodside, and it's up and coming neighborhood. JMHO

You can also FM me with q's about FH.

Re: Opinion on NYC Neighborhoods

She's right. It really depends on where you work and if you rather commute longer to live in a nicer neighborhood. Forest Hills is really nice and convenient to most of Manhattan (midtown/downtown). It has good shopping (Austin St) and is near lots of public transportation (LIRR, express buses, local bus to Manhattan, and the subway). Yellow cabs pass by on their way into the city so you don't always have to rely on gypsy cabs. Woodside is alright but I just went through the process of looking for apts there and I preferred Forest Hills. And remember, if you can see the 7 train from your apt, then you'll hear it when you're sleeping. And instead of you'll be JMO.

Yes, you! You look really beautiful!

I haven't seen any of the apartments in the buildings you mention. However, the Pinnacle is a very nice building and verrry close to the subway. I know Gerard is also nice, but a little further from the subway. Hmmm...the third one you mention I'm not sure where that building is located.

Park Slope is beautiful, but very $$$ I hear. I really like Forest Hills, but prices are going up there too. A friend has a decent size one bedroom for $1700, I think.

Re: Opinion on NYC Neighborhoods

mmm... for all ya Forest Hills gals, do you know of any decent coop/condo/apartment on Queens Blvd near the E or F who's known for renting? Is the Pinnacle really expensive?
