So, most of you are getting cakes based on taste (buttercream/whipped cream) as opposed to look (marzipan/fondant)?
i had fondant it didnt taste bad however my sister is a pastry chef and i know they do put flavoring in it sometimes.
marzipan tastes almost like almond paste it is sooo good. my sister made that as the icing for my friends shower it was soooooo goood. it has the look of fondant. you can have it in many colors too.

Ok, the major response is buttercream....

I think that buttercream can look great - I loved the look of my cake and I don't think we compromised the look of it even though we didn't go with fondant, you know?

Re: Opinions on cake
what about when the baker uses fondant OVER a layer of buttercream?
does that help with the flavor issue?

Buttercream. Whipped Cream is actually better, you just can't leave it out for long.

Re: Opinions on cake
I actually like fondant. FH had it at WOTY and liked it too. It was the first time he had tried it. I'm also a fan of marzipan.

All bakers put fondant over a thin layer of buttercream. If they didn't the fondant wouldn't adhere to the cake.
IMHO, fondant is an acquired taste. If done correctly, fondant is really yummy, however it is rare to find a baker who can make it taste really good and have the texture not resemble chewing gum that has been left unchewed and unwrapped for two day. The texture very often turns people off.

Which is the most tasty?
Marzipan/fondant? Buttercream? Whipped Cream?
Marzipan is made from an almond paste base. Fondant is made from corn syrup and sugar. Buttercream is nothing more than lard and powdered sugar with vanilla extract added for flavor, and whipped cream is fresh cream, sugar and vanilla extract.
It is a matter of personal taste.
For a wedding cake, whipped cream is the least stable. It requires refrigeration until served, and is next to impossible to decorate with. Fondant is expensive, and many people don't like the taste. Not too many bakeries will make a cake with marzipan. Which leaves buttercream. It is easy to work with in terms of decorating, it doesn't require refrigeration, but IMO is very sweet.
The only other option is ganache - which is not frosting, it is essentially chocolate glaze.

Re: Opinions on cake
I like both buttercream and whipped cream but NOT fondadnt.. each time I have had it I did not like it. I think we are leaning more towrads the buttercream as you can't leave whipped cream out as long.

I think the white icing is like a pastery icing, used to make sweet rolls. I'm not sure what the chocolate is exactly, except that its chocolate.
