Opinions on South Baldwin/Baldwin Harbor Area...I think we found our house!!!

We went house hunting in South Baldwin/Baldwin Harbor yesterday and we found a house we really liked. Believe me, it needs work. A good $30000 to make it work for us. It's a small property with the back yard overlooking the water. You walk in, and you are looking at the dining room, the living room is to the left, and the bathroom is off to the side of the LR (Which DH hates, but could deal with it if the price was right).
The kitchen is in front of the LR. Then the utility room is a step down from the kitchen with a washer and dryer. There is a staircase in the center of the floor and a large BR next to it. Upstairs, are two huge, and I mean HUGE bedrooms because the dormers were raised. They have to me about 15x20 each. They are identical and they are really nice. No basement, no attic.

We would need to knock down the garage, get new appliances, redo the deck, carpets, bathroom, kitchen and utility room plus sanding and repainting beacsue you can still see the tape on the walls. Overall, it's a really cute house that when we walked in, we were like, 'IT DEFINATELY HAS POTENTIAL...' where as the other houses we saw we said absolutely NOT! There was also a really nice house in Island park, very well kept, but 2 bedrooms and small. Taxes were lower, but the rooms in Baldwin are HUGE. I had never considered Baldwin until the real estate mentioned it, so I would really like some opinions. Attached is a pic. I am also wondering it it's worth putting all that money in to...

Having lived in Baldwin all of my life until recently...

Baldwin back in the day was a great place to live in! I lived closer to the RVC border, but had a lot of friends in the harbor. You should FM me and tell where the house is and I can tell you more about the area.

The Baldwin school district is pretty good, but a major concern that I would have is what is happening in the surrounding towns. As with other towns, there are problems with gangs, prositution and other things of that nature.

Baldwin is trying to build itself back up. They just added Walgreens to Grand Ave. There really is no shopping in Baldwin. The Baldwin Chamber of Commerce is trying to change that.

Personally I would not want to live in North Baldwin, where my parents live. The harbor is still okay, but there are some areas that are a little shady. If you move there my brother will be you garbage man! LOL!

FM me if you want more info.

having lived in the baldwin/south hempstead area my whole life, i agree with the statement that shopping is scarce in the area. except for the cvs shopping center, the pathmark on grand ave., and the waldbums shopping center on grand ave again. its not known for its shopping, but the schools are good. as for the 'surrounding towns,' i see no growing problems, that don't exsist in every single town in the USA. good luck to you no matter what you decide.

It looks like a cool house! Waterfront homes will never lose value! Which school district are you in?

It's in the Baldwin SD. but for the first 8 grADES, my children will most likely go to Our Lady of Peace in Lynbrook because my mother will be watching them while my husband and I are at work.

Just to clarify, there was talk some time ago about some of the surrounding area's students being bused to Baldwin HS. I think Roosevelt's school was possibly going to close. I know this was a hot topic back then, I don't know how relevant it is now.

I think that Baldwin is changing. With such a short commute to the city, it is becoming a hot spot for young professionals, according to my mom's friend who is a real estate agent there.

Good luck to you with whatever you decide! It looks like a great house!

etd for spelling.
