Opinions on Tavern on the Green?

Has anyone ever been to a wedding/event at Tavern On The Green and want to share their experience - good, bad or indifferent? My mom wants to have a meeting with the event planners over at Tavern, but it's not really my style, but apparently the price is reasonable for Manhattan. I'd like to just tell her NO, but I need to hear some accounts of how they run an event. If they throw a great party then I'll consider it.

Also, do they hold one event at a time there?

I don't know much about Tavern on the Green except that it is pretty reasonable for Manhattan and I am pretty sure they hold more than one wedding at a time

I used to work at a lot of events there. The place is BIG and there are several different rooms so I am sure they must have more then one wedding at a time. Most of the rooms are not to my taste, but lots of other people like it. I never found it that easy to get to, but it can't hurt to humor your mom and check it out!

ugh - that place needs a wrecking ball to it....it is in bad need of renovation in my opinion.

hi i went to look at it and i liked it alot. I am pretty sure it is one event at a time, but the restaurant portion stays open during your party. They have a back room that is pretty that runs about $175 per plate. It is pretty, but i was afraid that the menu offerings seemed a wee bit skimpy.

Then they have a much larger front room (the restaurant portion) that you can rent out for $50,000 on a sat night (200 guests). In this scenerio, the entire place would be yours, no other events going on, and the lady i met with said the menu would be much more extensive. The front room was gorgeous in my opinion. This price may sound crazy, but it actually is not bad for a saturday night (i priced this for june).

One of the main drawbacks for me is that they have parking right next to the restaurant, but the lot is owned by a different company and it would be $15 per car... i would not want my guests to pay this themselves. Also, it was a teany bit difficult to find in central park. Overall, i liked it, worth going to look at.

I was going to look there as well - I liked the idea of Manhattan - and unlike the Central Park Boat House - it has parking. But I was led to believe there is more than one event - plus the restaurant traffic. I was really put off by the dining reviews on such sites as citysearch.

But it is a beautiful place!

It seems really crowded all the time at Tavern on the Green. There is also no bridal suite so you have to get ready in their office.

Some of the rooms are tacky but there is one room (the one with the clear windows) that seems nice.

The price is definitely good. I think I got quoted $13,500 for the entire room.

They are having a fundraiser there on April 6, for a policeman who passed away's family. You can find out first hand how an event is there...

I ate there 12/19 for my Birthday. I liked the way it was decorated for Christmas but I agree, it needs a renovation. In the dining room everyone is served at the same time, very strange. The food was not that great. It cost 15.00 bucks to park there and we ate there!!! Plus a guy comes around totake your picture and thats 25.00 bucks. You HAVE TO check your coat and they charge you. i wont be going back unless its for a drink in the bar.

So I called my mom and we're goin gto go see the place on Saturday. I saw some of the pics of the place online and while it may be a great fit for someone else, I don't think it's quite the style I like. My fiance and I are looking to have a more simple aesthetic at the wedding and the Tavern doesn't really seem to fit that. But I love my mom and I'm trying to keep this wedding planning thing as drama free as possible. I'll try and post about the experience later on in the weekend.

For what it's worth, I've been to a party there and I thought the food was pretty bad. Maybe they were having an off night, but I was really surprised - I expected more from them. Also, the outdoor space was nice - the party room had some outdoor space - but it was July and you're in Central Park which might as well be the woods - the mosquitos were vicious. Just another thing to consider. Good luck with your mom this weekend!
