OPINIONS ON UNIONS!

What do you think of unions??

Do they help the work-force or just cause inflated prices??? Do you think that they still work anymore in this day and age?

I did not vote, but I think it depends on the union.

Unions help the workforce and are needed IMO everywhere.
You can see in industries without unions- workers are treated simply like human capital, the first to go in an economic downturn while the executives take larger and larger salaries and bonuses for themselves.

I think workers can negotiate in some companies just fine without unions, but the solidarity is definitely a benefit when bargaining and negotiating. My union is a very large union, and it has done a wonderful job of negotiating yearly salary increases, cost of living increases, etc. I also know I could never be fired or laid off without a reason--the union brings the organization to court unless the reason is well-documented and legitimate. It definitely makes me feel more secure in this day and age, though it is also difficult to get rid of workers who do not do their job well.

Dh is in a union that used to be really strong, but now it is disinegrating. He is getting paid 35% less than the industry standard in his field (both union & non-union shops) and is suffering through contract negotiations for the first time in his career.

It is a bit scary.

I didn't vote because my opinion is mixed - I believe unions have a place but I don't always agree with the policies, I don't like that the best worker could lose their job because they have lower seniority than a not so good worker

I just see both my union and my husband's union getting weaker and weaker. I know my national carries a lot of cloat but our local is so weak. I was shocked by hubbies union and how weak they are, when they are normally known for 'old school' antics!

I think unions in theory are great. In practice, not so much.

It depends on the type of union. I think carpentry unions are stupid. Alot of guys can buy their way into it and DH told me if you stay on just all union jobs you're most likely going to find that you're not working all the time. But I think it depends on the person - if you're a good worker I can't see how you would find yourself not working unless you're in between jobs. But I know alot of guys in the union but not working union jobs (ie: work for themselves) but pay union dues to keep their medical and pension.

And DC37 isn't that great of a union. I was in it from 95-98 and a year after I left it was found out that a big vote was rigged and we didn't get a good raise at all that year. I believe it was dealt with and people got retroactive raises but I do'nt think the union really has an impact on upper management of the jobs they represent. Sigh. But I had an awesome dental and eye plan with them and we got a free turkey for Thanksgiving every year. And I got a 'scholarship' from them every semester (it was more of a grant) when I was going to school. So it wasn't horribly bad, just not great either.

I don't know it depends. But now that I think of it I don' think the school unions have made that big of an impact (ie: helped teachers) because their salaries are still so low. But they are good because they help teachers obtain tenure and other things they deserve.

I guess it depends on how you look at it.
