FH and I decided to narrow down the invitaion list by allowing only 'single' people who have been involved in a serious relationship for more than 2 yrs to bring their significant other. Some members of our BP are not currently dating but think they should be able to bring someone. What do we do?

Re: opinions please
Maybe you can make an allowance for the bridal party only? I was in a wedding a few years ago where only the bridal party was allowed to bring dates if they were single. None of the other single guests seem to even notice or care

Re: opinions please
why don't you ask your bridal party if they would be offended if you didn't invite them with a guest. that way you can get a feel for what the vibe is.

We're basically doing the same thing but allowing the bridal party to bring a guest. The other weddings I've been a bridesmaid in have followed the same pattern.

Re: opinions please
DH and I didn't invite single, unattached people with unspecified 'guests' except for the bridal party--we made an exception for them. However, we did invite unmarried couples regardless of how long they were dating.
If I were a guest, I would be offended if I were in a monogamous relationship and I was not invited with my significant other. (And yes, that has happened to me when I was single.) My feeling is that your two year test is arbitrary. My thinking would be, 'Who are the bride and groom to determine how serious my relationship is?' If I were single and unattached, I would not be offended if I were invited without a guest.

Maybe you can invite single friends with a guest tha tyou know or have met, etc. I wouldn't limit it to two year relationships, b/c people can be in a serious relationship for under 2 years. IMO, those people should be invited,
As for the BP, maybe you can make an exception for them to bring a guest they are dating, but not just bring any ol' random person, just for the sake of bringing a guest.

completely and totally correct. DH and i were engaged right around our 2 year anniversary and i would be very upset and angry if i wasn't invited to a wedding with him at that time
guests need to have fun. it's hard being there by yourself if your boyfriend is at home. it's all you'll think about and is what you will remember most about the wedding. it's happened to me before and that's what i think of first

Re: opinions please
I COMPLETELY understand u....we had a very large guest list & were paying for things all on our own. We only had people that were serious relationships invited with a guest (ie 'a boyfriend' or 'girlfriend') ....i even had close family members invited by themselves if they weren't seeing somebody...nobody ever said anything. And i wouldn't be offended if i was dating someone for a few weeks & was invited by myself...unless u have the money and the room to splurge, i don't think anyone should assume they get to bring someone if they're not in a steady relationship. If your BM's have something to say, speak with them honestly and tell them u need to keep the numbers down...and that if in the end u have extra spots u'll let them know.

I one hundred percent agree with this. By the time FH and I were dating a year and a half, we were very serious and there is no way I would've gone to a wedding without him.

Re: opinions please
ps: i do have to say that two years is reaching out on a limb.....my hubby & i were pretty serious by 3-6months. If someone can call someone 'their boyfriend' THEN i believe they should be invited.

Re: opinions please
maybe just let the bp bring someone. but other people who are single not allowed to. people who are single, invited with a guest usually feel like they must bring someone.

Re: opinions please
I would stick to only those in long term relationships. Otherwise could cause bad feelings even among your guests invited without.
