FH and I just booked a trip to DR for his cousins destination wedding.
We're paying $1,800 for 3 nights/4 days...and we're both taking off two days with no pay.
Since we're paying soooo much just to get to this wedding, I really don't what to do about the gift.
I would like your opinions to help me to decide what is appropriate to give

Usually for destination weddings it's appropriate to give less than you normally would....especially if you're paying your own way to get there. But I still think the 'give what you can afford' rule sticks - it's just that you can't afford as much because you are paying for a flight and hotel too.

I put not sure...because if this were me, I'd be really hard to convince that I had to give a gift. I almost feel like in that sort of circumstance your presence is the gift...you're already spending SO much money...but then again I'm not sure if that's rude or not. I feel like its not, and I feel like its rude for them to expect a gift after spending almost $2000 just to see them get married and share in their day.
I guess my answer is 'no gift' but I can't speak to the rudeness level of that lol

Hmm...that's a tough one. I'd probably give a little less than I normally would give...or really take advantage of the old school rule of 'you have a year to give a gift' just so it's a little easier on the wallet and give my regular amount in a few months or so.

i say to give a small gift, i would personally feel a little awkward going empty handed even though ijust spent all this money going down there ya know?

I think you can definitely get away with giving a very small gift. They will totally understand, hopefully!

I say a small gift (money) but not as much as you would give at a non destination wedding.

I voted for giving a small gift. With the amount it costs to attend the destination wedding, I don't think that you should give the same amount as you would for a non-destination wedding.
