About how long before the wedding should you order invites.. we plan on sending them around july 1.. give or take a few days... Not sure how long they usually take to get in?

We ordered ours 6 months before the wedding (4 months before they had to go out). Don't forget to factor in time for the calligrapher, or whoever is doing it, to address the invites - it takes longer than you might expect.

I ordered mine in April, 7 months before. that turned out to be WAY early but I was afraid they would be discontinued and I just HAD to have them

I just ordered mine a week ago but wanted to order them in the beginning of Dec. My invites should only take about a week to come in and I've heard of people getting them back from Inkspun in a few days. Hand calligraphy is another issue. For that you should factor in a few weeks.
I held off ordering only because we were having wording issues but if I had my timing settled earlier they would have just been, 'together with their parents'!
I's talk to the place where you'll be getting your invites and ask them- if you know there won't be any changes needed then order them early and order a few more extras then you think you'll need in case your guest list takes a big turn!!
