Re: oriental culture. Q.. weddings...
One of my best friends is Chinese, and she said they all give money up the wazoo for weddings... she said they don't even have bridal showers, they just give money. Chinese weddings are banquets, with about 20 different courses, and the brides changes her dress quite a few times. I don't know the exact traditions, but I wouldn't worry about being skimped!

I went to a Chinese wedding recently...I hope my gift was enough...
The bride did not change her dress, but her mother did numerous times.

Chinese culture Q.
butterfly20: I'm not sure what it is that you are asking about. Are you asking what is an appropriate wedding gift for a chinese couple? You need to clarify. I'm chinese and in the chinese culture, people always give a monetary gift. I believe this is also common with Italian culture. My relatives and good friends tend to give more $.

Re: Chinese culture Q.
i wasn't sure what they give.. my friend is going to a chinese wedding(and needs to figure out what to give), at her wedding one chinese couple gave bed sheets(cheap ones), and a few other couples gave low check amounts.. so im not sure if that is the culture, or just those guests in particular...

Gift Q
In Chinese culture, traditionally the preferred gift is money but it doesn't dictate how much to give. I don't think the situation you described is necessarily a culture issue. I would tend to think this is based on circumstances - how close they are to the couple, what their financial situation is, what kind of wedding it is - formal or casual, etc. Across all cultures there are cheap people and there are generous people. And it is best to have received a gift than none at all.
