East of Eden (Oprah's Book Club) by John Steinbeck Set in the rich farmland of the Salinas Valley, California, this often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations hopelessly re-enact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel

Re: orpah's book club pick is today
Wow I'm surprised she picked such a 'school' read!
Did anyone else have to read this in high school or college?

I read this in a college lit class...
I just thought she usually picks an up and coming writer.

Re: orpah's book club pick is today
honestly MANY of her past books had been printed for many years. She often tries to broaden her viewers book horizons. Toni Morrison was not really unknown or up and coming but she was not considered main-stream at that time. And Maya Angelo had been a writer for a long time too.

Oooh. Sorry, I never really kept up with it...only when it interested me, and that was usually when it was a new writer.
Thank you for the clarification!

honestly many of her books annoyed me. I think reading some classics will really broaden a lot of women's horizons. I will always be annoyed that The Red Tent was not one of her picks!
