Our invitations are on their way!

Our invitations are on their way!

I can't believe it! I just came back from mailing our invitations.

I can't wait to start receiving responses!

I had abandoned the dream of having them hand-canceled b/c I had to mail them in the city during the work day. I am just not home (on LI) when the post office is open.

I went to the post office on 43rd between 6th and 5th and the guy who helped me was SO NICE. He actually asked me if I wanted them hand canceled when I told him I was dropping off wedding invitations - and he started taking care of it right away.

I recommend going when it's not crowded (I was the only person on line there). I'm so excited that he was so nice about it... and even more excited that I JUST MAILED MY WEDDING INVITATIONS!

How exciting!

Stupid question but what does it mean to have them hand-canceled?

Whenever you send mail, the stamp on it gets 'stamped' (canceled) by a machine. Hand canceling means they stamp over the stamps by hand and not by machine. It's supposed to decrease the likelihood that your invitations or envelopes will get ripped or ruined on their way through the mail.

HOWEVER, this does NOT mean that the invites won't get run through machines. They will still go through the machine at the destination post office (and possibly through machines to sort it), but I think those are the bottom part of the envelope, which is less likely to get caught in the machine.

If you have ribbons or anything at the top of your invitations (I didn't, but many people do), the invitations have the possibility of getting stuck in the machine... or so I've heard.

At any rate, I don't think you HAVE to do it, but they offered - and it's just one easy way to attempt to prevent any damage to the invites.
