If you are going to an out of town wedding where you will have to travel and get a hotel room, do you give the same gift as you would for a wedding that you won't have to travel to?
FH and I have a wedding in Annapolis in a few weeks and we're trying to decide what to give...
Thanks!

Re: Out of Town Wedding gift
we went to friends wedding in Vegas last year and we gave a little less- but we both went to the bachelor/bachelorette parties and they were biggggg money so they got about $50 less than we usually give

Re: Out of Town Wedding gift
I have gone to 3 out-of-town weddings.
The first was in Amherst, MA. It was a friend that I used to be close with but we had started to grow distant at that time, so I bought something off their registry, less than I normally would have if I didn't have the hotel expense.
The second one was a destination wedding in London for a friend, and the bride and groom insisted that we not give them gifts because they knew the flight and hotel were expensive. I pooled some money with another friend of mine and got them a set of sushi plates.
For the 3rd one, FH's cousin got married in Florida, and we gave the same as we would have if we didn't have travel expenses.

Re: Out of Town Wedding gift
It's a bit of an odd situation - it is FH's buddy from college that he isn't particularly close to, and his bride I have met once for approximately 30 seconds. I'm more than happy to go, and will obviously give a gift, but money is tight considering our wedding is less than 8 weeks away!
I thought of getting them a set or two of their china, but they didn't register for any, so then I went back to giving $$$, but I'm not sure what is appropriate.
Hmmmm.

i would give the same as a gift regardless of where the wedding is....although, if they are coming to your wedding, they will be smart and give you the same thing in return
BTW....have you been to Annapolis before? It's beautiful there! My brother goes to the Naval Acadamy, so i am there all the time! WHen you are there try and stop at Chick and Ruth's deli, it is on the main strip headed down to the water. and if you have time i would take a tour of the acadamy...it's gorgeous!!!

I have been to Annapolis, but not in years. It is beautiful there! I'm sure it will be a lovely wedding - I hope they have nice weather - it is outside at 3:30 in the afternoon!

Did they register for anything? If not and you feel funny about giving money (I would, too), you may want to buy a gift from a store with locations in MD and include a gift receipt.

They did register for everyday dishes and platters and things at Crate and Barrel. They have a big serving platter and a big bowl that we could get them and have sent, but I'm not sure if that is enough.

are they coming to your wedding?
I would say the platter or some of their everyday dishes is a good gift. How much were you thinking of spending? I usually go by the $100 per person rule...but if you can't afford that, then i wouldnt worry too much. People need to realize that it is the thought that counts and you give what you can afford. I am sure that when it comes down to it they would rather have you be there with them then receive a big expensive gift....and if that is not the case....then are they really worth spending all of that $ on???
I understand your situation and it is expensive to travel. I would try not to worry too much. What does yor FH think?

I would give the same gift if that is where they live not if they are having a destination wedding.

They are coming to our wedding - so then I think we should just give money and we'll get it back - but that seems so silly. I mean - basically we could just give each other nothing and come to the exact same conclusion!!
Does anyone else every feel like that is silly - especially when two weddings are so close to one another??
I think we may just end up giving money anyway!

that is actually what i am doing with 2 of my friends....our weddings are all so close to one another and we are in each others BP's....so we decided to just give each other a card for the wedding, and only exchange gifts for the shower. If you feel comfortable you can suggest that to these people, but if not then i am sure they will just end up giving you what you gave them. It does sound silly though, lol!

Two of my friends are getting married this year, one this coming Saturday and the other 1 month before us. Yes, I find it silly to give $ and then just get it back (at least I hope I get it back!!), but I would feel funny not giving anything at all.
