Outer and Inner envelope help!

Outer and Inner envelope help!

I'm a little confused with the whole inner and outer envelope and exactly what goes on them...

according to the sites I've found online...

for a married couple... the outer would say Mr. and Mrs. John Doe ... and their address, and then the inner would say Mr. and Mrs. Doe

and for single people (who are invited with a guest -- not including people who have a significant other, for those we would put that persons name, right?) ... the outer would say Ms. Jane Doe, and her address.... then the inner would say, Ms. Doe and Guest.

Is this right? It just seems weird to me that the outer envelope wouldn't say 'and guest' even though I know that 'etiquette' says this is unappropriate!

Also, for children invited... their names don't go on the outer at all?? and just the first names on the inner?

THANKS for your help ladies, I'm very confused!

We skipped the whole inner envelope b/c we had pocketfolds.

I addressed the outside envelopes as if they were the inner envelopes:

The outter enevlope is formal with:
Mr. and Mrs. John Doe
Address.......

The inner is suppose to be a little less formal. There are two ways of doing it.
You can put either mr and mrs again, or you can use first names. The inner envelope doesnt get an address. It would read as follows:

Mr. and Mrs. John Doe

or

John and Jane Doe

or (you can eliminate the last name if you want to also:

John and Jane

For singles, yes, only the person you are inviting goes on the outer. On the inner you would put their name and 'and Guest'.

For children, you could do this on the outer:
Mr. and Mrs. John Doe
& Family (or & children)
and then on the inners you would write each of their names.

Its all a matter of how formal you want to be. Personally, we went with the more formal of the three and put 'Mr. and Mrs. John Doe' on the inners.

The outer envelope does NOT say guest. It is addressed to the person who is supposed to get the invitation.

The inner envelope can be formal or inform.

If it's formal, there are no first names. It would say either

Mr. and Mrs. Doe

Mr. Doe and Guest

Miss Doe and Guest

Miss Doe

If it's informal, it's whatever you call these people. It could be

Jen and Guest

Aunt Jane and Uncle Jack

Mark and Jessica

Mr. and Mrs. Doe
