So, I am in the process of ordering invitations, and I just heard that it is more formal to put your invitations into an envelope and then to put the entire thing into an outer envelope.... I had never really heard of this before, is everyone doing this?

Re: outer envelopes??
it depends on the type of invitation. Mine came with both outer and inner. I'm not really sure why though! i think your supposed to put the persons name on the outer envelope ex. Mr. Robert Smith and then on the inner you would write Mr. Robert Smith & Guest (no address) Thats what i did. HTH!

Re: outer envelopes??
I think it depends on the style of your invite. Pocket folds are very formal and allow you to put info into tidy designated pockets.
I am not using a pocketfold style invite so I will be using an inner and outer envelope. The inner will be to informally put the names of the intended guests.
ETA: it will be just as easy for you to place the intended guests names informally insode of the pocketfold eliminating the inner envelope.
hth.
i think I just confused myself

Re: outer envelopes??
I used the outer and inner envelopes they were only a couple of dollars extra but after we ordered them I realized we really didn't need them I think its a personal choice

Re: outer envelopes??
im having the hardest time picking invitations!!!! I guess that if they come with outer envelopes that would be great and would save the hassle of buying seperate ones.

Re: outer envelopes??
I'm most likely going with pocketfolds so I think i'll just stick with an outer envelope

Re: outer envelopes??
If they come with inner and outers and you like them, order them that way. If you love the invite and it doesn't come with both, and you still want the inner, then order them.
I wanted both, the inner lined in addition to the outer. I like that look and I wanted the formality, but it's all a personal preference, there is no right or wrong way.

so using the inner and outer envelope is the more formal way? our wedding is going to be black tie, so we want to keep things pretty formal.

Yes, using inner lined envelopes conveys a more formal affair....generally. If your wedding is black-tie I would suggest using lined inner envelopes.

They automatically come with the outer, that is the envelope you send it out in. So if it 'comes' with only one, it's the outer. Then you'll need to order a lined inner envelope.

Re: outer envelopes??
it is the more formal way to do the outer and inner. I consider my wedding on the less formal side, so I was trying to argue my way out of an inner envelope, but I did it anyway because I've never really seen an invite without one and my sister looked at me like I had 10 heads when i said I didn't need one - she was like, you already cut out the reception card [i just did reception immediately following ceremony ]

Posted by mariana881 so using the inner and outer envelope is the more formal way? our wedding is going to be black tie, so we want to keep things pretty formal.
Not necessarily. For instance, you invite Mr. and Mrs. Smith who are married. You would write Jane and Bob on the inner enevelope if you choose to use one. It get's tricky when you invite a single and a guest, or just a single and no guest.
The inner envelope tells all. If the invite is address to Brad Jones and the inner envelope says Brad and that's it, he will know( or should know) that he has not been allowed a guest.
If he was allowed a guest it would say brad and Guest.
am I confusing you. If I am I am so sorry.
My guess would be if you are having a black tie affair you want to follow ettiquette. If you don't want any surprise guests and you are inviting some singles make sure, especially those guests, have an inner envelope addressed to he/she alone.

No, you are not confusing me at all....actually it makes a lot more sense now! I am looking to follow ettiquette, I guess I just never paid attention to something like envelopes!

I certainly didn't until a year ago! the k n o t.com has great info on ettiquette as well as what they are for and why you are supposed to do it.
My MOH bought me 3 great books about planning etc. that have been like my planning bibles!

Re: outer envelopes??
for my engagement party, i used only 1 envelope because it wasn't very formal. I used the 'inner' envelope only because it had the colored lining (which I like a lot), but inner envelopes don't have the glue that you moisten to seal the envelope. I didn't know that!! Only outer envelopes have the glue on them (and in some cases you can get the peel & stick ones), but i used a glue stick and they sealed just fine.

Re: outer envelopes??
We did b/c FH has TONS of cousins and they're not all invited, so we were able to use the inner envelope to clarify who is invited....
