Using an outside caterer gives you some more freedom of choice, especially with the menu. This can work to your advantage if you are careful. However, an in-house caterer sometimes includes centerpieces and other things in the prices, and most outside caterers do not. This could mean other bills will be higher, like the florist bill. Try finding a place you really like and comapring that to what you would pay for Prospect Park. I am having my wedding at a non-traditional place and have done it for less than I would have at my first choice. They only wedding hall I really liked was much more expensive than I could afford. By using an outside caterer we were able to dictate exactly what we wanted. Be careful with the little "add-ons" not included with an ouside caterer because they can add up quickly. Try to negotiate everything into the price pp.

OUTSIDE CATERER v. HALL CATERER
Vanderbilt Mansion in Oakdale. It is on the grounds of Dowling College. The have a courtyard with a fountain where we are having the ceremony. If it rains we can use the conservatory. The cocktail hour is on the veranda by the Connetquot River. The reception is in the ballroom. They do not have many weddings there each year. We were looking for a mansion or castle that did not have a large rental fee. I do not think it is as nice as Oheka, but is also less than half the price. You can email me if you want more details.
I don't think you should settle for less than exactly what you want. You only et married once and you want to feel special. you don't sound so sure of your decision, so check websites and ask others to look around for you. The women on this site will ALWAYS give you honest feedback and I can bet someone here has looked at the site you are considering.
