FH's family is from Ireland, and most of his extended family is still there. FMIL recently brought up the fact that all of the overseas relatives did not get their invitations to FH's cousin's wedding early enough to make the trip. We are planning on sending out STD cards at Xmas time for a July 4 weekend wedding, FMIL thinks we need to also get a separate set of invitations for the overseas guests to send out a month earlier, I don't think it's necessary. What do you girls think?

Re: Overseas guests......
That's what the STD is for. I don't think you need a seperate invitation. Send them hotel info with the STD. That should be good enough.!!! JMO

Re: Overseas guests......
I am in the same predicament as you are. I am going to Ireland with FH in September for a visit anyway so I am ordering all my invitations this summer and bringing the ones that we are mailing out to the Irish relatives and friends (about 50 invitations!) with us and then having his family mailing them out in early December from there. It will be cheaper for me to bring the invites with us and have them mailed out from there. Otherwise, I have to go to the post office here, find out how much postage to put on them (overseas can be costly don't forget) and also I'd have to have one of his family members send me over irish stamps for the RSVP cards!!! So this way it's less of a hassle. Of course the fact that we're going there anyway makes it easier.
I would send your overseas invitations out like 2 months before the big date, if you're doing STD cards too. If you don't do the STD cards, then mail out the invitations like 3 months ahead (but better to do STD cards for them - so they can save up $$ for airfare and hotel). We also want to do our invites and we are putting earlier RSVP dates on the Ireland ones too. Just so we will know how many to expect. JUst remember - 2-3 weeks before you want to send out the irish ones, have one of his relatives get irish stamps to put on your RSVP cards and mail them to you. After that , go to the post office with a stuffed envelope and have them measure it so you know how much postage to put on the irish ones!
Good luck ! Mary

Re: Overseas guests......
I agree with Boop.
My FH has a few overseas relatives. We did not however send out STD cards but I know my FMIL has spoken to several of them and they all know about the wedding. We are sending our invitations out in about 2 weeks for a 9/13 wedding.

Re: Overseas guests......
Thanks, girls. I don't know any of these relatives and neither does FH. To be honest, the only reason they are being invited is because FH's mother is mad they were invited to her nieces wedding and she is competitive. They don't really talk to these people and I just think it's a pain in the you know what for people I could care less about. Does it cost extra to have a different RSVP date on some invitations?

Re: Overseas guests......
I think the STD is fine...but also prepare the overseas invites first...and then mail them a bit earlier
edited to say: It's hard for people to make weddings overseas to begin with...DH's grandmother and 4 aunts could not make ours...and my cousins DH is from Sweden and only had 11 people from Sweden there (including his immediate family)

Re: Overseas guests......
I think sending out the STD is good enough.. you can always send out your invites a little earlier to them(no need to have separate invites made.. also in the STD you can add little slips for them with hotels nearby if you think they should be making the reserations earlier

I think if your sending out STD's then you don't have to send out oversea invites early, IMO. But I would still make sure you send out the invites with ample time for them to reply.
