Packing for Hawaii

Packing for Hawaii

Wondering if I need pants or sweaters??? Does it get cool at night? What about airconditioning is the restaurants?

How expensive it is to buy shampoo and stuff there? The less I have to carry with me the better!

I tend to overpack so if anyone has any suggestions...

Re: Packing for Hawaii

if you are doing the bike ride at night (where you ride bike down mountain and leave at 2am) you definitely need warm clothes. If not, I would just bring a sweatshirt or shawl for night. We went 3 years ago in July and remember it always being hot. As for pants, I tend to wear pants at night even in the summer so I bought a couple of pairs.
I don't remember thinking things were that expensive there compared to home (people who claim that don't live in NY).

um NO!! you're not so far yourself!

i would say-- suck it up and carry toiletry stuff with you b/c when we went to aruba we didn't bring a whole lot and ended up spending $$$$$ on bug spray, calomine lotion, after sun lotion, etc... stupid stuff I never thought of but ended up needing.

Re: Packing for Hawaii

Most of the restaurants in Hawaii have outdoor seating. It's nice to sit by the water and have dinner.
When I went (in May) I brought cotton sweaters just to throw over my shoulders, and sweatshirts becuz I like to be comfy in the room.
Hope this helps!

Re: Packing for Hawaii

There are CVS's and K-Marts on the islands...and I found the prices to be the same as here in NY. However depending on where you are stayiung you can use the shampoos they give you. The ones in the Maui Hyatt were bigger than the ones you get normally and they gave us new ones daily even if we weren't done with the one from the day before. I brought home 4 of gels/shampoo/conditioner each. They were really nice!

I'm trying to think of what the Hyatt in Kauai gave us - the bottles were big too. But if you prefer to get something there I would go to a drug store or K-Mart.

Where are you staying?

I would pack at least one sweater and a light pair of slacks or capris just in case or rainy weather - it did rain a bit in kauai but mostly for like 15 mins for a few days - one day it poured but cleared up 1 hour later.

If you are going to Haleaka Volcano for the sunrise trip - yes do pack jeans or warm sweats and a heavy sweatshirt and socks and sneakers. I would even suggest a hat (baseball cap is fine) I was freeeeezing up there but once it becomes daytime and you're driving down it gets hotter. I wish I wore shorts under sweatpants but I dind't and I was hot in my jeans by the time we got back to the hotel.

The bike ride starts about 1/2 hour to 1 hour after the sun rises and most tour groups give you wind breaker jackets and pants to wear over your own clothes so that is good. I would still wear jeans or sweats though if you are biking down.

Lucky you! I wish I was going back! A few of the Restaurants were chilly espeically if you have some sunburn you get the chills so! SO I would bring a jacket or a sweater! As far as Shampoo and stuff like that they have Wal Mart & KMart on the islands and they are pretty close to the price we pay here! Hope this helps you!

FH and I went to Hawaii (it was in december though)... and at night it got a little chilly... I would def pack some hoodies or long sleeve shirts... in regards to buying stuff, Honolulu is pricey... I am sure shampoo and conditioners wont be too much but I know if you go clothes shopping there they charge a lot (b/c they know so many people are tourists)...
a lot of the places we ate at were outside but I know the restaurant in the hotel had a/c...

We are staying in condos that are part of my FBIL's timeshare so I don't think they will have any toiletries there.
I am so excited! I will be there in 2 weeks

If you are planning on watchng the sunrise from Mount Haliaka (Sp?) then it is freezing! Other than that, it is really warm! I would bring a light sweater or jean jacket if you are goign to Kauai because it does get cool there at night. Other than that, its gorgeous!! I just back yesterday! I think I wore pants once!

Re: Packing for Hawaii

I just got back from Hawaii. I packed all sorts of khakis and cardigans, and I didn't wear any of them. It was hot, and warm at night. It did not cool down. I wish I had packed more tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, and skirts.

Have a great time! It is paradise!

Re: Packing for Hawaii

I agree with a lot of what Maribelle said. I know in Maui - when we drove from the airport to the hotel we past a huge WalMart - so we stocked up on a lot of stuf fthere - mostly treats for those long car rides and it was normal prices. Just don't buy from expensive hotels or you will get ripped off.

As for clothes....I went in the end of October and I mostly wore casual skirts and capris and tanks at night. I brought a light cardigan (basic color)to throw on when I needed it in AC. I get cold easily but I don't remember it being too bad. I think I was mostly comfortable in what I wore. When I went it was never too hot or cold at night.

Edited to add: I did bring jeans for the trip to Mt Halekelea and a hood sweatshirt. I wound up being fine in shorts and the sweatshirt but I went at 11am not 3am!

I know it gets cool at night. It is also very casual, you caould get away with shorts and a t shirt in most places. I was told not to have Fh bring a jacket and ties, that it is not necessary. Hope that helps!
