from what i can tell from the pic, the wood seems to match really well with the fireplace...so how about one of the light stone colors? keep it warm (all of the colors look warm) but not too dark which may close it in. good luck!

That's beautiful!
I'd say something warm, light and neutral.

Re: paint questions
I think since you want to keep the stucco, you just paint regular paint over it. I would ask what type of finish to use, either flat, satin, etc. I would also pick a light neutral color to compliment the wood. By the way, that room is great. The fireplace is beautiful

I actually am afraid of the stucco but don't know how to get rid of it. Does anyone know if you should use brushes, rollers, or a spray gun?
Thanks for the compliments on the fireplace. We moved in a few months ago but haven't even used it because we agreed not to go in the basement until it was fixed up

Re: paint questions
I think to get stucco off you have to sand it down Which could be a real process. I believe, I would ask the people in home depot. to painting over it would be the easiest, I would just use a brush or a roller, a roller might miss some spots due to the uneven surface and you might have to go over it with a brush anyways.
Good luck.

Re: paint questions
Use the thickest, most NAPPY roller that you can find and put it on thick, don't skimp or try to conserve paint. You will probably still need to touch up a few spots after the paint dries, but if you use a brush for the entire wall you will go insane....My whole house has plaster walls and I love them but painting is a time consuming PITA. Be sure about the color- you probably won't want to repaint any time soon ( I recommend a neutral- maybe beige, not white). Also, consider priming the walls first.
These are just suggestions....best of luck

What is the best way to paint stucco?
OK my Dad is a professional painter and wallpaper hanger and he said: get a VERY FLUFFY roller and you are best off using a flat finish. But the fluffy roller is the key!
Good luck

Re: paint questions
my new house will have stucco on the ceiling. the home inspector told me that we have to get someone to put up 1/4' sheet rock over it. sanding is timely and expensive. new sheetrock is quick and easy.
