There is an extension on the house that we are buying, and its really nice on one wall it has two big bay windows and a brick fireplace on the wall (of course the rest of that is PANNELING!! ) and the other wall was a brick wall, i would love that the only problem is these people PAINTED the brick IVORY!! How do I get that off ?? I dont want to sand blast because i hear that really destroys the brick,, plus its in the house and sand will be EVERYWHERE..

Re: Painted BRICK
Ooooo that is NOT easy. My father is in the process of taking paint off the brick at my parents' house. It's a royal pain in the a$$. There is this special tacky paper that contains paint thinner that you paste on the brick. (I don't know what the name of it is.) It sits on the wall for 24 hrs. then you have to scrape the paper off. Then once the paper comes off you sand the wall down with some sand paper. It's a tough job and they reccomend you do the wall in sections- not all at once. The brick will never go back to the original 'brick' color. It will be a little 'white washed' looking.

Suzanne, just wanted to pop in and say, if you are TTC (or can possibly be preggo) be careful with the strong chemicals in these things..

Re: Painted BRICK
We had the same problem and after 5 hours of trying to get it off, and making it worse, we gave up and painted over with a color that contrasted to the walls. It's not perfect, but it doesn't bother me so much now, and someday we may re-do the fireplace with river stones, so for now I'll live with it.
It was really an awful job and my advice would be don't even try!
Here's the in-progress picture with the barely cleaned bricks on the right, and the after picture (last Christmas) when we finally decided to just paint them a better color.
Suzanne... The paper is simply called PEEL AWAY It is non-toxic and there are NO fumes whatsoever (so no worries if you're TTC or preggo) it's a paste. You can get it at Home Depot and I found a full line of the products and info on this website PAINT REMOVER

Re: Painted BRICK
It will be a pain but you can always give that peel stuff a shot if it is a no go then paint it a different color! What a waste. Brick firplaces are so pretty!
