Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets
I did it. Wasn't as bad as you think. Just make sure they are clean, fill in any imperfections with wood filler and prime....I can't stress this enough....MAKE SURE YOU PRIME! Before and after attached!
I have another question .. if you painted the cabinats .. could you at some point down the road get those same cabinets re-faced???
Very nice tansformation with those before & after pictures!
We simply don't have the funds to do over the kitchen .. but I'm seriously thinking painting could be a great option, since it's so much more affordable .. you can get so much more bang for your buck.
Thank you for the advice!! Which kind of paint & primer did you use .. I was reading oil-based is a better choice than water-based.
Anyone else ever do this???

Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets
we painted our cabinets...cleaned and primed them and then painted them all pretty. made such a difference in the kitchen!!! we used a high glass/gloss paint on them, so they would be easier to clean.
the before pictures are a little far away - but the cabients were a really really dark brown color
The cabinets we have are very much like your before cabinets.
We have a bit more cabinets than what's in your picture .. but can you tell me how long it took you to do that??? And how much you'd charge to come and do mine!

Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets
It didn't take all that long to do it....we took off all of the doors, and sanded them down, took off the hardware. then we primed them, and painted them with two coats of each paint...the toughest part was getting it evenly in that green section in the center... all in all, i guess it took 2 days to finish....but only because we werent' living here, so i did a little, let it dry, did a little, you know the drill.
I'd love to come help you paint!!!

Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets
We gave ours a light sanding, cleaned them, primed them and repainted (2 coats). They were s*** brown and now they're light green and you can't even tell. I can post pics from home later. I don't know about the refacing, sorry.
I said I'd post pics (don't mind my a$$ in the after shot).
halloweenbride .. did you change out ALL the hardware when you painted??? the hinges in the after look new, too.
palebride .. I'm going to hold you to your offer if I ever get the courage to actually take on this task .. I have to admit .. I get very intimidated about doing these kinds of things.

Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets
We did it while we were painting the whoel place so it really wasn't all that much work....just one more thing to be done! It makes such a difference though - it's so worth it! Everyone who comes in comments on the cabinets!

Yes, we changed the hardware. You can also see we got a new counter top and added a border (we also got a new sink) which completely updated the look of the kitchen. It was built in the 70's!

halloweenbride: I have another question .. if you don't mind .. how much was the countertop? Our countertop is probably about the same size, with a small stand-alone cabinet next to our fridge.

Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets
It would be best to first sand the old finish (in order to create a 'scratch coat' for the primer to adhere to) and fill in all holes/imperfections with wood filler. Sand the wood filler smooth and prime the cabinets with an oil based pimer preferably Benjamin Moore or Pratt and Lambert. For the finish apply two coats of oil based gloss. I stress oil based products here because they will hold up to the high traffic wear and tear of kitchen use.

Wow!!! You did an awesome job! Looks so fresh and lovely.
Quick question -- did you buy your house knowing you'd fix up the kitchen , but eventually some day maybe redo the kitchen?
Every house we've looked at has either a REALLY REALLY old small kitchen, or a half*** job of an update - which is cheapy and ugly LOL....
To buy on Long Island takes a LOT of patient b/c w/ taxes & the prices ....
every house we've looked at has been on top of a railroad, on a very busy street or in front of a school/park.
B/c you have to sacrifice somethings...I finally told my FH that we're have to get a really old house in a good school district -- but NO railroad or busy streets! LOL...

This is actually our apartment which is in my grandparents' house. We completely updated the apartment before we moved in 2 years ago with the thought that we would be buying the house and having to rent the apartment so we put alot of $$ into it.
I think most houses have old or crappy kitchens because it's the most expensive room to redo.

Re: Painting Kitchen Cabinets
I've re-done 2 sets of kitchen cabinets.
We removed the cabinets & hardware, sanded them down. (One set had glue where a decorative wood border was so it took a lot more sanding) filled in all the holes and nic's (including the old hardware holes since the new hardware didn't line up). This goes for the holes in the actual cabinets as well as the doors. Then painted and put back together. From start to finish it took me about 4 days, spending about 2-3 hours per day. The sanding is the longest part and most important. You'll be so mad if you don't take you time and when your done you see all your imperfections.
P.S Don't cheap out on the paint brush. There expensive but the finish it so worth it. You don't have to pick bristles out and you don't see as many brush marks with a softer bristle.

We primed and painted out ugly dark wood bathroom cabinets. It looks great!

Your bathroom cabinets sorta look like the ones in my kitchen.--- Are they like a laminate or that pressed wood? I was wondering if I can paint that type.
