Painting over wooden panels???

Did anybody move into a house w/ half-wooden moldings (kitchen, etc) and painted over it until you decide to redo everything?

Or any room where you painted over wooden paneling etc... I'm not quite sure how time/money/labor intensive it is to remove all that - so it may just be better to paint it a nice white w/ a contrasting color (like clay or cream) until I can do it the right way.

We didn't do it, but wish we had! There was wood panelling in our dining room which I insisited FH pull down only to discover that it was stuck on with glue and it tore all the sheetrock

I'm going to paint over the kitchen cabinets to freshen them up. I plan on sanding them down to rough up the wood first and then probably white-wash them.

I would definitely paint the wood panelling if you don't mind the look of the panel.

My mom painted over wood panelling in dining room, and it looks great. It looks textured. That one is a light blue.

In my brother's room, 1 wall was panalling, so DH painted it navy and the other walls beige, it looks great.

It is only paint, and if you like the way it looks then great, if not you can go into demo mode and see what awaits you on the other side.

My painter used an oil based primer on our paneling. He said that's really important.

This post actually came at a great time. That was what my FH and I did this weekend. We had a ton of wood moldings/trim in our house, including wood inlays in all of the windows. We wanted it white. We were told you get Zinssar (Spell ?) oilbased cover stain. We found it in Home Depot and it works like magic. Lightly sand it first and then apply 2 coats. It's great!

My parents painted the paneling in two rooms in the house. One was light greyish wood and they painted it green. The other was really dark almost black wood paneling in the basement and when my brother was living down there, he primed it and then painted it a light silvery gray.

Oh yeah, my parents still have paneling in our den. I don't know why they never changed it, but it gives the den a cozy look with the fireplace and all.

Yes my living room was all wood paneling and it was kinda on the dark side I painted over it and it looks great I will take some picks and post them.

I had to do 2 coats since I did a light color but it looks 10 times better
