Paneling?!?!

Anyone have paneling in their home? What are you doing? I want to take it down by FH said that it is a really hard job because we will probably have to put up all new sheet rock (we are not handy!!) Has anyone painted over it? How does it look?

Thanks!!

Re: Paneling?!?!

That was my one big no no. I said no paneling, just for the reason your DH said. You can paint over it, it depends on the type of paneling it is how it will look. But I am almost positive you can paint over it.

Re: Paneling?!?!

I know you can paint over it. I would go to home depot and ask their advice on painting paneling.

Before you do that double check how it is put up. If you see that they nailed it up (you should see the nails in it) you can take it down pretty easily and probably not have to replace the sheetrock. If it is glued up, then you probably will have to replace the sheetrock.

Re: Paneling?!?!

I actually had paneling in my family room on half the wall ( basically there is a ledge in the middle of the wall so the bottom wall is about 3 - 4 away from the main wall). The bottom wall had paneling that really bothered me so I took down the paneling. I just replaced the paneling with luan ( I think that's how it's spelled) a thin plywood, used primer and then painted it.

I'm SUPER anti-paneling, Personaly I wouldn't paint over it because I'd know its still panel and hate it any way.( But yes you can paint it )If its nailed in its easy to remove.I've done it in 2 rooms in my parents house and 1 room in our house. Spakeling the nail holes is easy I had never spakeled before but it was a piece of cake!
Look into how it's it up and decided from there.
Good Luck!

Can you sheet rock over the panelling?

Dad has it in the house and I hate it with a vengence. DH said if dad ever let me get my way he'd just sheetrock over the panelling since it's such a b!tch to remove.

Re: Paneling?!?!

We had it in our dining room and it was God awful! We just took it down and painted the wall. We were lucky and it came right off. Look to see how its up. If its just nailed on, it will pull right off. Sometimes it's glued. Then you would have to spackle over the wall when you take it down. My friends house was old and there wasn't even a wall behind hers!!! I think that made it easier than glue cause she just put up new sheetrock!! I also have lived in places and had to paint over it. It looks fine!! Just use a good primer first! (The house we just bought was a mess, that's how I learned about all this stuff). Good luck!

Re: Paneling?!?!

I grew up in a house where almost every wall was paneled. Luckily, we only have light colored paneling in our finished basement. I can live with it for now, but someday we plan to try painting over it.

Re: Paneling?!?!

When my FH's brother bought his house there was some wood paneling... when they took it down there was no sheetrock behind it! The house we are currently interested in has some paneling. The office we will just paint over... the LR my FH wanted to put 1/4 inch sheetrock over it.

Re: Paneling?!?!

Thanks girls!!

There are two walls in our office that are paneled that I wouldn't mind painting but the den has paneling on the bottom half that I would like to take off at some point...maybe we'll just paint it for now because it sounds like it is going to be a BIG job!
