Should we feel obligated to invite our parent's friends? My mom offered to pay for hers, which is fine but my future SIL is telling me that I HAVE to invite my future MIL's friend. I know that I don't HAVE to, but should I? I just don't know.

Re: Parent's Friends
We are inviting a few of FMILs friends. I just didn't see how I could tell her no if my parents are inviting friends. I would have put a limit on it (or demanded $$) if there were a lot, but I think she only invited maybe 4 friends so its not a big deal.

Re: Parent's Friends
I would like to invite a few of my dad's friends, just because they've been nice to me over the years. Hell, I'd rather invite them than my cousin and his wife that live around the corner from my father and never call or come over to see how he is and see if he needs anything.
I don't think FH invited any of his father's friends...most of them are FH's friends too but I also know that most won't come since they are overseas.

Re: Parent's Friends
I invited my parent's close friends....and my parents did give me $$ towards part of the reception and so did my MIL for her friends...but DH and I told them a limit - we wanted our friends to be there too!

Re: Parent's Friends
We'll probably end up inviting the closest friends. I guess I just really don't like being told that I absolutely HAVE to do things.
Thanks for your feedback!

Re: Parent's Friends
As bad as this is going to sound... if your mother offers to pay for her friends... GET THE MONEY up front... My mother did the same thing... And I NEVER GOT the cash for her annoying-- and VERY cheap friends!! Just a heads up! Good Luck!

We are inviting parents' friends. Of course you don't 'have' to! Close friends sounds more thatn reasonable to me.

Re: Parent's Friends
We are inviting our parents friends. And I haven't met all of them. But it makes them happy and they feel like a part of the celebration so I haven't said anything.

Re: Parent's Friends
My mother is inviting her friends and my future mother in law is inviting her's as well. At first i felt a little uncomfortable with the idea but they said they would pay for them and its only 6 or 7 total.

Re: Parent's Friends
i told my dad he could invite whatever close friends he wanted- we dont have a big family anymore- many passed away.. his friends are like family-0 he is a retired detective so many of his detective friends are coming. As for my fi parents, we told them the same thing. it didn't come out to much...

Re: Parent's Friends
We are inviting friends of our parents. In my case some of my parents friends are closer to me than family!
But you dont have to! I would give them a # of guests and if they go over that then you will need $$$ from them! Then they can fill up their spots however they choose, family/friends etc!

Re: Parent's Friends
we're inviting pretty much everyone! It the first wedding for both of our families....and so we told out parents to give us a list of the people they wanted to invite....and created a list from that. There were more people than we had originally hoped.....but I know not everyone will be able to make it, so I think we'll be ok! I cuoldnt' bera to tell anyone that they couldnt' invite certain people!! It's a celebration!!

Re: Parent's Friends
I have a 'no people we don't know ' rule. Its not a monry thing, more of a privacy thing.
dates/spouses are ok, but i think we know everyone's spouse & I hope not too many people bring random dates.
I made 1 exception, b/c he has 2 frineds that he has knownfor 20 years & they are a packagae deal, & i really shoudl have met the 2nd oen by now. And my dad only has 5 people on his side of the family ( incl. 3 children)and they live in Atlanta & may not come, so I felt it was not a big deal.
FMIL has a few friends, but FH knows them & I met most of them at his graduation party.

Re: Parent's Friends
Sometimes it is just easier to invite them and suck up the cost.
