Does anybody else have issues with parents, in-laws & holidays & who you are spending them with? My parents invited us for an upcoming holiday, and now my FIL's are mad because we are not driving them to their friend's house instead. We got invited to my folks first so we accepted their invitation. My FH told them that they are going to have to compromise, that we willhave to alternate who we spend the holidays with. Am I wrong??

Re: Parents, in-laws & holidays, ugh!
We do Thanksgiving with my inlaws, Christmas Eve day with my mom, Christmas Eve with my dad and Christmas Day with my inlaws. Easter is with my dad.
Father's day, I usually have both dads over for lobster with our brothers. Mother's day, we go to my mom's for breakfast and his mom's for dinner.
It gets hectic! Good luck working out a schedule.

We kind of split them:
My family gets thanksgiving dinner, easter dinner, christmas brunch
His family gets us for christmas eve, easter egg hunt and july 4th.
It's all about compromise.

i think we're going to to thanksgiving thursday w/ my parents - then go to his parent's house on the saturday for the rest of the weekend.
Christmas Eve with my family and Christmas day w/ his family.
they live about 2 - 2 1/2 hours away from each other so i guess it could be worse.

Re: Parents, in-laws & holidays, ugh!
Most of FH's family is in Poland with the exception of his parents and godparents who are on LI. Since my parents don't ever want his parents to sit home just the two of them (in case the godparents have other plans), my parents have invited FH's parents over to our house for holidays and just recently FH's parents decided to do the same.
Thanksgiving is at my house. Christmas Eve is mostly at Fh's house since this is when they exchange gifts. Then midnight mass with my family. Christmas brunch at his house Christmas day at my house. Blessing of the Food on Easter Eve afternoon and Easter morning brunch at FH's house, Easter Sunday dinner at mine. ALL OF THIS INVOLVES MY PARENTS, HIS PARENTS AND US AT BOTH HOUSES!!

For Thanksgiving we switch every other year and as far as the other holidays I'm jewish so most of those holidays have 2 days to celebrate. And as far as mothers and fathers day we usually do a daytime thing with my family and dinner with his- its been working out well that way and I hope it stays that way!!

Re: Parents, in-laws & holidays, ugh!
Christmastime is always a sore spot for FH & I. I think birthday's are THE most important day for someone and so it should be their day. Unfortunately, for me apparently, I was born on Christmas Eve and FHs family does the whole CE fish dinner and it's thie whole day event. So every year I insist that I want to do something else on my b/day - esp since I don't eat fish - and every year we argue and I eventually relent. I adore his family so it's not like I hate going there - which is why I relent...but I would like to do something different. ESP since we go back to his mother's the next day for Christmas and then to his nannie's. We see my dad the day after Christmas. I see my mother either CE morning or Christmas morning.
Thanksgiving we split up...one year with his family, one year with my dad.
We're lucky to have the day after Thanksgiving off so we can visit anyone we missed the day of...and we get anywhere from 1-2 weeks off for Christmas/New Year's every year (which is part of my 'ammo' when I'm fighting for 'my' day on CE! - still doesn't work ).

You are 100% right! Your inlaws have to realize that you have family too! Let them know that some holidays will be spent with your family and some will be spent with his family.

I'm beginning to become more thankful that all my FILs live in Ireland. Will see them once a year during the summer...not a bad deal!!!
All holidays with my family..though I think we will have to go to Ireland one of these years for Christmas. I'm sure it will be beautiful, but very wet and cold. Cant complain!

we split them, some of them are only spent at one house, some are split in half.

Hey, I thought I was the only one who 'jumped' around on holidays (my parents are divorced as well). I know that holidays will only be more stressful after we are married
